    Nurse Educator

    Job Description:

    1. Assists nursing staff in the identification of patient care priorities and

     

    promotes the development of critical thinking skills in the clinical areas.

     

    2. Models and promotes patient advocacy.

    3. Assists nursing staff in the assessment, planning, implementation, and

     

    evaluation of patient care.

     

    4. Participates in the development and implementation of standards of nursing

     

    care practice.

     

    5. Participates in the development and implementation of policies and

     

    procedures that are directly and indirectly related to area of specialization.

     

    6. Advances professional nursing practice through publication and/or

     

    membership participation in professional nursing organizations.

     

    7. Participates in quality assurance/improvement activities that are directly

     

    and indirectly related to area of specialization.

     

    8. Coordinates and participates in unit-based and hospital-wide inservices and

     

    conferences.

     

    9. Develops and/or participates in the development of education material for

     

    patients, families, and staff.

     

    10. Assists nursing management with the identification of staff educational

     

    needs.

     

    11. Accepts responsibility for identifying and meeting own educational needs.

    12. Participates in the development and implementation of both broad nursing

     

    division goals and department/unit specific goals.

     

    13. Models leadership qualities/behaviors in interactions with all healthcare and

     

    hospital professionals.

     

    14. Attends and participates in service meetings.

    15. Utilizes knowledge of nursing research to support and advance professional

     

    nursing practice.

     

    16. Critically analyzes research studies in area of specialization to justify

     

    inclusion/exclusion of findings into practice.

     

    17. Acts as a liaison by supporting peers and management goals and

     

    objectives.

     

    18. Demonstrates the willingness and ability to continually provide educational

     

    opportunities to MCH staff.

     

    19. Serves as a problem solver and resource for difficult or complex patient care

     

    situations.

     

    20. Provides feedback to the Nurse Manager on the clinical performance and

     

    professional behavior of peers.

     

    21. Develops and records education programs using latest evidenced based

     

    research.

     

    22. Assess needs of staff, provides a comprehensive orientation program, and

     

    provides opportunities to meet learning needs.

     

    23. Participates in hospital/unit committees, projects, and conferences and

     

    encourages other staff members' participation.

     

    24. Maintains effective open communication between staff and administration

     

    as it relates to patient care and/or changes on the unit.

     

    25. Participates in educational experiences of affiliated schools.

    Organizational Responsibilities

    1. Follows hospital and department policies with special attention to safety,

     

    dress, attendance and punctuality, and display of ID badge. Subscribes to

     

    hospital’s mission statement, code of ethics, and standards of conduct.

     

    2. Handles all work-related information in a confidential manner, as outlined in

     

    Confidentiality Policy. Recognizes and respects each patient’s right to privacy,

     

    and understands that this is protected by statute. Understands that looking up

     

    patient information not needed for job duties is prohibited and may be grounds

     

    for immediate dismissal.

     

    3. Demonstrates initiative and creativity to continuously improve services,

     

    departmental and interdepartmental processes, and any other activities that affect

     

    quality.

     

    4. Plans, organizes, and renders care for (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult,

     

    geriatric) patients within an assigned area.

     

    5. Performs work responsibilities while staying in compliance with all

     

    applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Understands and agrees to uphold the

     

    Hospital Compliance Plan.

     

    6. Adheres to Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control plan including consistent

     

    use of safety devices as designed to prevent sharp injuries.

    Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters preferred.

    2. Current registration in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

    3. Two years of related work experience.

    4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross CPR certification is required for all nurses working in Intensive Care Unit, Stepdown Unit, Emergency Department, PACU, Labor & Delivery, Cardiac Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Interventional Radiology, Stress Lab, Pacer Clinic, Cardiac Rehab, and Nursing Supervisor role.

    2. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required for all nurses working in Cardiology, Critical Care Areas, Nursing Supervisor role, and/or administering moderate sedation. The following areas meet these criteria: Intensive Care, Emergency Department, Cardiac Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Interventional Radiology, Stress Lab, Pacer Clinic, Cardiac Rehab, GI Lab/Endoscopy, and PACU.

    3. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required for all nurses working in Labor & Delivery, Nursery, and Post-partum.

    4. American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required for all nurses working in Emergency Department and PACU.

    5. An active AHA BLS card is a prerequisite for ACLS and PALS.

    6. All other nurses not mentioned above are required to complete and maintain a minimum Mount Auburn Hospital (MAH) CPR training and skills validation every two (2) years. If such staff maintains an active AHA BLS or Red Cross CPR card from another non-MAH organization then the active card will supersede the MAH CPR requirement. Staff holding an active AHA BLS or Red Cross CPR card will not be required to complete the MAH CPR training provided the superseding AHA or Red Cross card is current.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    1. Normal hospital environment.

    2. Exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and other toxic agents.

    3. Standing or walking approximately 70% of the time.

    4. Upper extremity demands include ability to perform data entry with repetitive hand movement, and visual concentration at video display terminal, to review and enter data.

     

    Mount Auburn Hospital employees must be able to readily adjust to change and to handle a rapid-paced environment and the stresses associated with that, while continuing to provide high-quality, efficient service.

    Pay Range:

    $81,640.00 USD - $210,433.60 USD

     

    The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
