New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for three (3) continuing contract (non-tenure track) Clinical Assistant Professors in the Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness Master of Arts Program, to begin on September 1, 2026.
The appointed faculty members will be members of the Department of Applied Psychology. The department includes: a large and active undergraduate program with research, theory, and action among its core pillars; 1 accredited MA degree-granting program in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness; and 3 PhD programs that enroll fully funded doctoral students (5 years of fellowship) in Developmental Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and Psychology and Social Intervention. The department has an excellent track record of procuring extramural funding for research and training, and supporting collaborative and transdisciplinary scholarship.
The Master of Arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at NYU Steinhardt is a comprehensive 60-credit program offered in both residential (in-person) and online formats. The program prepares students for careers as licensed mental health counselors through rigorous academic coursework and supervised clinical training. Emphasizing cultural humility, social justice, and responsiveness to diverse client needs, the program develops counseling competencies for working with individuals and communities across the lifespan, promoting social justice, and fostering wellness. Graduates are prepared to deliver evidence-based and culturally informed care in community agencies, hospitals, and private practice settings.
We seek applicants with expertise in counseling and counselor education who are able to teach any combination of the following courses: Dynamics of Vocational Development, Interpretation and Use of Tests for Adults, Individual Counseling Theory and Process, Brief Psychodynamic Therapy, and Cross-Cultural Counseling. Ideal candidates will demonstrate flexibility in teaching across the curriculum and a commitment to supporting a large and diverse M.A. program, including providing administrative and programmatic support as needed. Experience in teaching and/or mentoring international students is highly desirable. Each position includes teaching six courses across the fall and spring semesters (3 courses per term), with the expectation of availability to teach at least one additional course during the summer term for additional compensation.

Responsibilities: Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring graduate students. Responsibilities include contributing to program and curricular development, supporting student professional identity formation, and participating in service to the program, department, School, and University communities. Clinical faculty may also engage in scholarly work, supervision, or creative professional activities relevant to the field of counseling. The expected teaching load is six courses per academic year.
NYU's dynamic Global Network University includes NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and international programs and academic centers around the world. NYU Steinhardt faculty may have the opportunity to engage in teaching at these global sites.
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or Counselor Education. Candidates must be licensed to practice counseling/therapy in the state of New York. Priority will be given to those with a doctorate from an APA-approved program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. A minimum of two years of relevant clinical experience post-licensure and at least two semesters of teaching experience are required.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $74,000-$114,000.
