Job Summary
The Urban and Regional Planning Program at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is seeking a practice track faculty member at the rank of adjunct practice instructor. We are looking for someone with significant professional and scholarly experience in real estate to teach the graduate-level course URP 590: Integrative Real Estate Seminar in the winter 2026 semester (January 6 - April 30). The course builds on the foundational knowledge gained in the Real Estate Development Certificate program while addressing gaps in students' backgrounds as they progress toward completion. It explores a rotating selection of advanced topics-such as obstacles to high-quality real estate development, the structuring of complex financial transactions, shifts in capital markets that influence financing strategies, and effective real estate project management.
The duties of the position will include the following activities: leading syllabus design and instruction, meeting with individual students to provide feedback over the course of the semester, grading, and arranging any site visits and guest speakers. The expected effort for the appointment is 25% (or 12.5% if co-instructors are selected).
The Real Estate Initiative aims to strengthen the curriculum in real estate development at the university, conduct research in this interdisciplinary field, and enhance and reform professional practice. The initiative includes the graduate Real Estate Certificate and an undergraduate real estate minor, both of which focus on the making of well-designed, livable, and sustainable places that offer a high quality of life in mixed-use, compact, walkable, and transit-oriented built environments. The certificate gives students in any master's degree program at the university the opportunity to take a range of courses that deepen their knowledge and qualifications in real estate development and related fields.
Responsibilities*
+ Teach one course per year (currently winter semester, in-person in Ann Arbor)
+ Engage in ongoing, paid professional real estate work outside of the University of Michigan and incorporate real-world experience into the delivery of the course
+ Provide service to the program (consulting, committees, etc.) commensurate with teaching effort percentage, and participate in the ongoing intellectual development of the real estate curriculum
Required Qualifications*
+ Degree in real estate, urban and regional planning, or an equivalent degree from a related discipline
+ 8+ years of demonstrated and recognized professional work experience
