Responsibilities
Join Noblis, a mission-driven nonprofit research organization dedicated to advancing science and technology for the public good. As a UX Engineer Intern, you’ll help shape the future of human-AI interaction by designing and developing intuitive, trustworthy, and impactful user experiences for cutting-edge chatbot and LLM-based applications.
You’ll work with state-of-the-art computational infrastructure (including H100s and B200s) to prototype and evaluate interaction models that make complex AI systems accessible and effective for real-world federal missions. Your contributions will directly influence how users engage with AI tools—ensuring transparency, usability, and ethical design at every touchpoint.
This is a unique opportunity to:

**Work Arrangement** : Remote during the academic year (up to 15 hours/week), followed by a 10-week in-person summer internship in Reston, VA.
Roles/Responsibilities
+ **Build and prototype** web-based user interfaces for AI-powered applications using modern frameworks (e.g., Node.js, React, Gradio, or Streamlit)
+ **Implement interaction flows** and UI components that support intuitive, accessible, and responsive chatbot experiences
+ **Collaborate with engineers** to integrate frontend prototypes with AI model outputs and backend services
+ **Conduct usability testing** and gather user feedback to refine interface behavior and improve user satisfaction
+ **Participate in code reviews** , sprint planning, and design discussions to learn best practices and contribute to team goals
+ **Document design decisions** and development workflows to support reproducibility and knowledge sharing
Required Qualifications
+ U.S. Citizenship
+ Familiarity with UX design principles and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD), plus basic experience with web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/or Python
+ Exposure to frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js) or interactive prototyping tools (e.g., Gradio, Streamlit)
+ Comfortable working in a collaborative development environment using version control (e.g., Git)
+ Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, Interaction Design, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or a related field
+ Minimum GPA of 3.3 with expected graduation between December 2026 and May 2028
Desired Qualifications
+ Experience building interactive web applications or demos, especially for technical or AI-related projects
+ Interest in learning how to connect frontend interfaces with AI model outputs and backend APIs
+ Experience conducting usability studies or user research for technical or data-intensive applications
+ Portfolio or GitHub showing design and development work (personal projects, coursework, or research)
+ Ability to ask questions, take initiative, and grow within a fast-paced, research-driven team

Compensation at Noblis is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the combination of education, certifications, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, internal and external equity, location, clearance level, as well as contract-specific affordability, organizational requirements and applicable employment laws. The projected compensation range for this position is based on full time status. For part time or on-call staff, compensation is proportionately adjusted based on hours worked. While monetary compensation is important, it's just one component of Noblis’ total compensation package.
