Job Description:

Under the general supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor, the Unregistered Histotechnician supports the flow of anatomic pathology specimens, which may include tissue embedding, microtomy, frozen section cryotomy, and staining.

Essential Functions:

+ Organizes and manages the flow of anatomic pathology specimens through lab from specimen receipt through preparation of final diagnostic slides

+ Specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, frozen sections cryotomy, staining and other duties as assigned

+ Support QA by monitoring indicators such as quality control, temperatures, and instrument failures.

+ Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshoot and take corrective action when standards are not met

+ May assist with surgical pathology gross examination dependent on education verification and onsite specific competencies

+ Execute tasks in detailed and timely manner

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years, or 60 semester hours or equivalent, including a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or Associate degree with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both). Education will be verified by Quality Assurance Manager or Director.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Previous pathology or histology experience

Physical Requirements:

+ Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

+ Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

+ Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.

+ For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
