Agency Overview
As the state's P-20 education agency, the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) strives to increase student achievement, school completion, and life opportunities for all Georgia students. GOSA provides policy support to the Governor and ultimately the citizens of Georgia through:
• Communicating meaningful education data to stakeholders; • Providing research support and data analysis on various education programs in Georgia to inform the Governor’s policy, budget, and legislative efforts; • Auditing education programs to ensure fidelity at the district and school-level to performance and accountability requirements; and • Identifying, supporting, and sustaining educational innovations that align with the Governor’s education priorities.
Program Overview
The Georgia Council on Literacy was established within the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement by Senate Bill 211 in 2023. The Council is charged with coordinating the state’s literacy efforts and oversight of Georgia’s Literacy Plan: Vision 2030. To support these efforts, the legislation also included provisions for the Georgia Literacy Coach. With the addition of the State Literacy Coach Coordination Committee, the Georgia Literacy Coach became the primary liaison between the Committee, the three state-wide coaching systems, and the State Literacy Coaching Coordinator. The Georgia Literacy Coach supports the implementation of Georgia’s three-pronged approach to differentiated literacy coaching and the integration of common metrics and evaluation tools based on the guidance of the State Literacy Coach Coordinating Committee.
Position Overview
The Georgia Literacy Coach supports the statewide implementation of effective literacy practices through direct collaboration with state, district, and school literacy coaches. Under the supervision of the State Literacy Coaching Coordinator, this position advances the mission of the Georgia Council on Literacy by building instructional capacity, promoting evidence-based literacy practices, and ensuring consistent coaching support across regions.
Key Responsibilities
• Statewide Coaching Support: Provide professional learning, coaching, and technical assistance to state, district, and school literacy coaches in alignment with state literacy goals.
• Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with the Literacy Coach Coordinating Committee to 1) ensure statewide consistency in coaching models, resources, and data reporting and 2) provide guidance on consistent development and implementation of unified district literacy plans.
• Collaboration and Coordination: Attend trainings and quarterly meetings for all state literacy coaching systems (Let’s Read Georgia, Growing Readers, and CSI/Structured Literacy Coaches).
• Implementation Guidance: Support schools and districts in implementing the Georgia Literacy Plan, including the science of reading and structured literacy frameworks.
• Professional Development: Design, deliver, and evaluate professional learning sessions for literacy coaches and educators.
• Data and Reporting: Collect and analyze literacy data to inform instruction and state-level decision-making.
• Resource Development: Contribute to the creation and dissemination of instructional tools, guidance documents, and communication materials for literacy coaches in coordination with the Literacy Coach Coordinating Committee and its partners.
• Program Evaluation: Support continuous improvement through observation, reflection, and feedback cycles with state and federally funded literacy coaching systems and district literacy coordinators.
• Interagency Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between the State Literacy Coaching Coordinator and the State Literacy Coach Coordinating Committee
In addition, this position requires a great deal of communication with program partners, internal and external stakeholders and state and national educational leaders. It is critical that the State Literacy Coach possess strong and effective communication skills and be adept in traditional means of communication as well as through a variety of social media outlets.
