The JHU Office of Sustainability is seeking talented candidates to fill the position of **_Sr. Sustainability Specialist, Engagement & Community-Building_** . From technical advisement to planning, policy development, academic partnerships, and campus engagement, the Office of Sustainability’s work spans the physical, academic, and cultural environments of JHU. Our office aims to empower students, faculty, and staff to meaningfully contribute toa more just and sustainable world.
The Sr. Sustainability Specialist, Engagement & Community-Building reports to the Assistant Director of Sustainability and leads the office’s outreach and engagement portfolio focused on building awareness, support, and participation for JHU’s sustainability priorities among diverse stakeholder audiences.
The ideal candidate will bring a deep knowledge of sustainability issues, a passion for relationship- and network-building, and an ability to translate strategic goals and priorities into educational and participatory opportunities that help build a community of sustainability advocates and actors across the university.
The Sr. Sustainability Specialist will strategize, develop, and implement a wide variety of opportunities that support education, awareness, and behavior change, while building strategic partnerships internally and externally. Strong project management, program development, event coordination, and a background in creatively managing diverse engagement initiatives is essential to this role.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
+ Manages the Office of Sustainability’s engagement programs and initiatives, focused on sustainability education, behavior change, and community-building.
+ Manages a variety of large- and small-scale events including Earth Month activities, service events, speaker and conference activities, student orientations, campus fairs, recognition events, etc.
+ Coordinates complex event coordination responsibilities including development of event production timelines and budgets, stakeholder and volunteer management, evaluating and booking venue spaces, identifying and engaging campus partners and co-sponsors, and applying for funds as needed
+ Manages the Office of Sustainability’s Internship Program, overseeing program logistics for a cohort of student employees co-managed by various office staff. Serve as the direct supervisor to a cohort of 3+ sustainability interns focused on sustainability engagement and outreach
+ Serves as a primary representative on behalf of the Office of Sustainability to students, student groups, and Student Affairs administrators, and develops opportunities for student-facing participation in advancing campus sustainability priorities
+ Researches, develops, and writes informational content to educate and foster sustainable behavior change practices among university students, faculty, and staff in support of university sustainability goals
+ Collaborates closely with other team members to align engagement activities with the strategic priorities of the broader Office of Sustainability, in support of JHU’s Climate Action and Sustainability Plan goals
+ Delivers complex writing assignments to clearly communicate engagement opportunities to diverse campus audiences, and supports the development of communications and design resources and information on an as-need basis, working closely with the Sustainability Communications Associate
+ Serves as a representative for the Office of Sustainability at events organized by other university entities and external organizations.
+ Represents JHU at select external events, conferences, and consortia as a means to share progress, build strategic partnerships, and promote adoption of sector-wide best practices. Responsible for various public speaking, presentation, and facilitation responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s Degree required in sustainability, environmental studies or science, or a related field.
+ Minimum three years of related experience required.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Bridge-builder with strong interpersonal skills and community-building experience able to work collaboratively with all forms of diverse stakeholders.
+ Highly organized project management skills with ability to manage a complex portfolio and efficiently prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
+ Outstanding event and project management experience, including the ability to manage all levels of logistics, lead a project team, prioritize tasks, and provide mentoring to others as needed.
+ Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
+ In-depth knowledge of complex sustainability issues spanning multiple topics such as built environment, energy, waste, transportation, food, environmental justice, etc.
+ Ability to adjust weekly schedule, including occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.
+ Communications and design experience a plus
+ Experience working in higher education a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s Degree preferred.
