    Job Description

    The Quantum Technologies Training and Testbed (QT3) Lab at the University of Washington is seeking a full-time **QT3 Research Scientist** to lead instrument operations and support in its **user facility** and **instructional laboratory** . This role is ideal for a technically skilled individual, including candidates with direct facilities experience as well as recent masters, PhD graduates or postdoctoral researchers—seeking a hands-on, impactful position in a collaborative quantum science environment. The QT3 facility provides cryogenic, optical, and electronic instrumentation for the measurement and analysis of quantum materials and devices.

     

    The QT3 Research Scientist is primarily responsible for operating, maintaining, developing, and debugging complex scientific instrumentation, including cryogenic systems, as well as designing and executing spectroscopic and microscopic characterization experiments, and developing instrument control software. This includes oversight and hands-on work of critical lab equipment essential to daily operations and ongoing research activities. The role also includes a small component of general facility administration and supervision of student workers when applicable.

    RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

    Research Scientific Equipment Operation and Development – 70%

     

    + Operate, maintain, and support user-facility measurement and test platforms including optical and cryogenic systems.

    + Specific instrumentation includes a Bluefors LD250 Dilution refrigerator with base temperature < 10 mK and 9-1-1 T vector magnet; low and room temperature measurements on two QT3 built confocal microscopes for studying quantum light from the visible to telecom bands. The two microscopes include operation of a 4K cold-finger FourNine optical cryostat, NKT pulsed supercontinuum laser, Santec tunable telecom lasers, a wide variety of detectors including superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. Spectroscopy is performed with Teledyne spectrometers with Nirvana InGaAs and Pixis silicon-based detectors.

    + Lead technical onboarding and develop safety/training programs for new users

    + Lead, manage, and mentor a undergraduate student workers supporting instrument capabilities.

     

    Instructional Equipment Engineering – 15%

     

    + Apply technical expertise and guidance to the maintenance and development of the QT3 instructional laboratory used for hands-on undergraduate education in quantum technologies.

    + Interact in a collaborative manner with faculty and staff to accomplish instructional goals; provide ideas to improve efficiency at the group level.

    + Co-develop, upgrade, and maintain teaching lab documentation to ensure proper use of equipment within the facility

     

    Administrative Oversight – 15%

     

    + Collaborate with fiscal specialists to monitor facility usage, administer recharge rates, and generate invoices.

    + Partner with the faculty director to develop technical content for equipment proposals and facility-related grants.

    + Contribute to procurement of new funding through technical proposal preparation and/or presentations, drawing directly from hands-on experience operating and working with advanced lab equipment

    + Maintain facility website to ensure accurate and up-to-date representation of lab activities for internal and external audiences.

     

    Perform other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field

    + Two years of hands-on experience with complex optical systems, cryogenic measurement platforms, or both or relevant experience

     

    _Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration._

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experimental hardware and support a diverse set of users

    + Experience applying established methods to meet research goals and troubleshoot problems

    + Proficiency in python, or similar language (for equipment automation)

    + Ability to train and interact with scientists with a range of backgrounds and levels of education.

    + Strong organizational and communication skills

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Direct experience with complex optical measurements systems and/or cryogenic measurements systems.

    + Experience with measurement of novel devices/systems.

    + Ability to plan and execute complex projects involving characterization of experimental devices by novel methods

    + Experience mentoring students or junior researchers

    + Interest in supporting both research and teaching missions

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $69,996.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $90,000.00 annual
