Summary:
Take on a high-impact leadership role managing one or two underwriting units within our **Commercial Lines Underwriting Department** . You’ll drive operational excellence and profitable growth while shaping strategy across multiple lines of business. In this role, you’ll ensure accuracy and compliance with underwriting standards, monitor agency performance, and take decisive action to maintain quality and profitability. Bring your technical expertise to complex risks, lead system and process improvements, and champion automation and efficiency initiatives that transform how we work. You’ll also play a key role in developing talent—mentoring team members and guiding their career growth—while collaborating with Product Management, Business Development, Claims, IT, and Business Process Optimization teams to deliver innovative solutions and achieve strategic objectives. + **Leadership & Strategic Direction**
+ Define and execute profitable growth objectives in partnership with senior regional staff.
+ Provide guidance and support to Regional Underwriter staff to ensure successful plan execution.
+ Represent the Region on cross-functional teams for rate analysis, product strategy, state reviews, market conduct, and internal audits.
+ **Underwriting Excellence**
+ Administer underwriting quality control, back-end validation, territorial management programs, rate dislocation management, and discretionary mod management.
+ Ensure adherence to personal letter of authority, company guidelines, and state regulations; escalate risks with profit potential to higher authority.
+ Execute underwriting guidelines, system referrals, and letters of authority; recommend changes to senior leadership.
+ **Operational Efficiency & Innovation**
+ Launch and manage new internal and agency-facing automation systems for Commercial Lines.
+ Identify improvement opportunities and manage defect resolution.
+ Coordinate timely and professional preparation of agency communications and instructional materials.
+ **Agency & Market Management**
+ Oversee agency management programs, including appointment validation, book of business analysis, action plans, and training.
+ Develop market intelligence, monitor industry trends, and recommend strategic responses.
+ **Talent Development & Team Management**
+ Identify training needs for underwriting and service departments; coordinate resources and delivery.
+ Administer personnel policies, including hiring, performance reviews, promotions, and terminations.
+ Provide career counseling and foster professional growth.
+ **Customer Service & Collaboration**
+ Ensure customer and agency service goals are met; minimize backlog and improve service processes.
+ Work closely with service departments to enhance operational effectiveness.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
+ 9–11 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree plus 7–9 years.
+ Minimum of 3 years in underwriting supervisory or management roles.
+ Strong collaborative skills with cross-functional teams.
+ Working knowledge of rate setting, product management, IT systems, policy services, and communications.
+ Proven ability to lead functional and technical projects, manage budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.

**Pay Philosophy** : The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at MAPFRE are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Salary Range $100,000 - $145,000
