  • Staff Software Engineer (Backend/Infra)

    Ganymede (San Francisco, CA)

    Apply Now

Ganymede is the lab data and integration platform for the life sciences, with a mission of improving the world through better healthcare outcomes. We believe that the highest leverage approach to speed up science is through better software. Today, we’re a leading startup in the life sciences software space with cutting-edge cloud technology and a rapidly growing client base.

As a staff software engineer focused on our backend and infrastructure, you'll drive the build of the Ganymede product with modern cloud infrastructure, AI tooling, and rich scientific data management products; architect our technical strategy; and leave your mark on the company, as well as the biotech industry as a whole. You'll wear many hats as one of our skilled engineers:

+ Engineering work will span the stack, with a heavy focus on backend/infra, and maybe some direct work with biotech data too! (No experience needed in hardware or science - just a willingness to learn what it takes in a rapidly evolving startup environment.) You’ll wear many hats and may also delve into security, dev tools, release engineering, and more.

+ Day-to-day work will be a combination of scrappy implementation to maintain our pace, and careful strategic planning to avoid and reduce tech debt in the future.

+ You'll interface with our founders and customers as we prioritize our roadmap and scope out the exact details of our releases. In a technical environment like Ganymede, engineering and product are inseparable.

+ You'll also be a key determinant of our culture, and will help us grow and set norms for the business as we scale

    Requirements

    What we look for:

+ 8+ years of hands-on experience working in a backend or infrastructure role

+ Lead backend and infrastructure development for critical platform components—from initial design to production rollout

+ Architect, build, and operate cloud-native systems using Terraform, Helm/Kubernetes, GCP services (Pub/Sub, Workflows), APIs, and event-driven pipelines

    + Demonstrated staff-level technical leadership

+ successfully taking net-new projects from zero to one as the primary technical leader

+ ability to construct and sell a vision for projects across both engineering and commercial considerations

+ mentorship of juniors on these projects improve their technical and design contributions

+ experience collaborating with and leading cross-functional stakeholders such as product or design

+ Improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of our backend stack through profiling, optimization, and resilient infrastructure patterns

+ Build leverage through automation - CI/CD improvements, repeatable environments, and end-to-end testing frameworks

+ Excellent collaboration skills in both written and verbal forms, as well as via clear, cleanly written code

+ Genuine desire to make an impact generally, and interest in advancing the health and welfare of people

+ Kindness, empathy, and low ego

+ Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the US and geographically based in the US. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Pluses (but not required by any means!):

+ Experience scaling systems to meet SOC2, ISO, and like standards security and compliance requirements

+ Experience with managing/developing Kubernetes cluster deployments and orchestration platforms such as GCP Workflows; general experience with release engineering

+ Strong Github portfolio demonstrating development expertise

    + Cross-cloud experience (GCP + AWS)

    Our Principles

+ Improving lives through better medicine: we’re intensely mission-focused, and are building a highly scalable business to make an impact on society.

+ Kindness: we come from a future where all human beings are treated with dignity, inclusivity, and active empathy, so we apply that to ourselves first in how we hire and treat each other.

+ Transparency: we are one team, and hold that openness is foundational to ensuring fairness, and that our actions tie to our shared mission.

+ Accountability: we believe that trust is the basis for building anything substantial, and stems from our being accountable to ourselves and each other.
