Responsibilities
Performs various support functions in research laboratory using proper procedures to avoid the risk of laboratory-acquired infection or sample-to-sample contamination. Maintains and cleans equipment and the facility; maintains and restocks supplies; and maintains computer database. Works under direct supervision. Attention to detail is essential while dealing with multiple tasks. Flexibility is important in adjusting to frequent changes in work volume.
This vacancy is not eligible for sponsorship/ we will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position. Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
This is a temporary sixth month position that has the possibility of being converted to a regular position.
Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma with coursework in mathematics and relevant sciences. Must have previous work experience that demonstrates organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task. Experience with Excel software is preferred. Requires manual dexterity, accurate typing, and good communication skills. Must be able to prioritize and adjust to changes in work volume.
Additional Information and Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
The lab is a highly reputed lab for studying and developing treatments for diseases like pancreatitis, sepsis, organ failure including heart failure and renal failure and COVID-19. The projects will focus on lipidomics, including lipid extraction, chromatography, calculations, processing and analysis. The specific skills will be taught on the job. The candidate should be excellent in high school level mathematics, and doing calculations and conversions effortlessly for basic chemistry like molarity, molecular weights. Ability to focus and maintain sustained focus for several hours at a stretch will be required to minimize error. Experience in Wet bench skills like pipetting, using a weighing scale, calculating molarity and making buffers is preferred. Data organization, accurate filing and retrieval skills will be required for excel files, Microsoft office, and graphing programs like Prism. Large data files of excel will be used. The work learnt and practiced will involve handling human tissues, blood samples and working with rodents. Progress will be closely monitored, and excellent learning, being a collaborative team player with efficient time management skills and low error rates can lead to selection for a permanent position.
