Job Title: Chief Engineer
Job Description
As a Chief Engineer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and ensuring the efficient operation of our pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. You will be responsible for strategic facility management, hands-on technical execution, regulatory compliance, team leadership, and emergency response management.
Responsibilities
+ Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance programs for all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, compressed air, process gases, water systems, and backup power systems.
+ Maintain detailed facility documentation, standard operating procedures, and compliance records required for pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.
+ Coordinate with operations teams to schedule maintenance activities that minimize production impact while ensuring regulatory compliance.
+ Lead facility risk assessments and business continuity planning, identifying critical systems, and developing robust contingency protocols.
+ Manage facility operating budgets, vendor relationships, and capital improvement projects while optimizing operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
+ Personally perform complex maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on critical facility systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, and electrical distribution systems.
+ Respond to emergency situations with immediate technical assessment and resolution, maintaining facility operations during critical events.
+ Execute routine maintenance procedures, system calibrations, and performance validations while ensuring all work meets pharmaceutical industry standards.
+ Direct daily operations of maintenance technicians and vendors, providing technical guidance, training, and performance management.
+ Establish maintenance standards, safety protocols, and quality procedures while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and regulatory awareness.
+ Share 24/7 on-call availability for facility emergencies, system failures, and critical operational needs.
Essential Skills
+ Minimum 5 years of facilities management experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device manufacturing, or other FDA-regulated industries.
+ Extensive hands-on experience with commercial HVAC systems, including air handling units, chillers, boilers, and pharmaceutical-grade air filtration systems.
+ Proven competency in electrical systems, including power distribution, emergency generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and control systems.
+ Experience with specialized pharmaceutical utilities, including Water for Injection (WFI) systems, compressed air systems, nitrogen generation, and environmental monitoring systems.
+ Knowledge of building automation systems, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and energy management systems.
+ Participation in FDA inspections, regulatory audits, or compliance assessments.
+ Technical Certifications: HVAC Certifications, NATE certification or equivalent, State electrical license or equivalent electrical certification, National Electrical Code (NEC) proficiency certification, Arc flash safety training, and electrical safety certifications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or similar facilities management credential preferred.
+ OSHA 30-hour General Industry certification, First Aid/CPR certification, Confined space entry certification, Lock-out/Tag-out (LOTO) trainer certification preferred.
+ Strong Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) knowledge.
+ Recognized apprenticeship and the ability to read system drawings.
+ Experience issuing permits and isolations.
+ Confident decision-making skills.

Work Environment
This is a day shift role located on-site at a biosciences manufacturing facility in San Jose. The position includes on-call availability once a month. The work environment involves stringent cleanliness, safety, and security requirements and encompasses manufacturing areas, laboratories, utility areas, rooftops, and mechanical spaces. Compliance with all safety procedures, gowning requirements, and access protocols is mandatory.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Milpitas, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr.
