    We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences ( SIBCS ) beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. A successful candidate will be one whose research and teaching lie in the areas of virology, microbiology, bacteriology, phycology, parasitology, protozoology, or a related field. Candidates should provide evidence of a strong track record of productivity in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research and be expected to demonstrate a capacity to develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program and to actively collaborate in research and grantsmanship with members of the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences, as well as with other faculty at UTRGV and outside of UTRGV , to impact the Rio Grande Valley & beyond. The successful candidate will contribute to the Master’s programs in SIBCS (Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemistry) and to a forthcoming Ph.D. program in Integrative Life Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to network and develop collaborative research efforts with other UTRGV faculty, including relevant research clusters within the School and the College of Sciences.     Department/College Background:

    SIBCS is a key academic unit within the College of Sciences at UTRGV . The School offers a diverse array of academic programs and research opportunities across undergraduate, master’s, and select doctoral levels, with a core emphasis on interdisciplinary science and collaborative, inquiry-based learning environments. SIBCS offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Biology and Chemistry, alongside B.S. programs with a teacher certification track. At the graduate level, students can pursue Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Biology, and Chemistry, with an interdisciplinary Life Sciences doctoral program (Ph.D.) under development.

     

    SIBCS faculty are actively engaged in robust research across a broad spectrum of STEM disciplines, with active funding from a variety of federal, state and private sources including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA , Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Welch Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and ConTex.

     

    Our faculty have expertise in medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, natural product chemistry, computational chemistry and drug-design, cancer, neurobiology, organellar dynamics, organismal biology and evolution, astrobiology, vector biology and vector-borne diseases, microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, nanomaterials, materials science, and other emerging areas providing many collaborative opportunities within SIBCS .

     

    To support this research, SIBCS maintains a sophisticated shared advanced instrumentation facility, equipped with major tools for cutting-edge biological and chemical science research. The School fosters numerous collaborative opportunities within its own college and with other colleges across UTRGV .

    Minimum Qualifications

    A Ph.D. in Microbiology or related biological fields is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for forming interdisciplinary collaborations and the ability to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities. Postdoctoral experience is an essential requirement for this position.

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

    Applicants should provide evidence of productivity and research related to Microbiology or related biological fields. Externally funded research and teaching experience are considered a plus.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Research and post-doctoral experience in Microbiology, including the possible sub-disciplines of Microbial Ecology, Virology, Parasitology, Microbial Vector Biology, Microbial Interactions, and other areas. Candidates for this position are expected to strengthen and complement our current research program in microbiology and possible collaborations with research centers.

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
