    An eligibility list may be created to fill potential vacancies within the next 12 months from the posting date. The Metropolitan Council has two vacancies for a full-timePower Plant Engineerin our Environmental Services Division.

     

    Hourly Wage: $51.80 (*$118,518 to *$126,599 Annually) *includes built-in overtime.

     

    Wages are based on total shift hours on a two-week cycle. Employees who work between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. will receive a 5.5% shift premium for each hour worked during those hours in addition to the employee’s basic hourly rate. The work schedule includes overtime, with each employee working 7 12-hour days in a 2-week pay period.

     

    These current vacancies will be assigned to the Solids Management Business Unit (SMBU) at the Metro Plant. The selected individuals will operate and monitor the MCES Metro SMBU process systems.

     

    Work Schedule: Treatment plants operate 24/7 year-round. Work shift assignments are determined through a job bid process.

     

    These positions will work a 12-hour shift (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. -OR- 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) on one of the following schedules:

     

    + First week: Monday through Wednesday– Second week: Monday through Thursday; OR

    + First week: Friday through Sunday -- Second week: Thursday through Sunday

    *These positions will work a set schedule. There will be no rotation.

    What you would do in this job

     

    + Oversee the safe operation of the systems and equipment needed to produce compressed air, steam, and generate electricity. This includes boilers, turbines, compressors, controls, pumps, fans, and more.

    + Is responsible for cleaning, inspecting, and monitoring steam and electrical generation equipment and rooms to prevent failures or excessive wear and tear, and maintaining the integrity of the systems to ensure the safety of plant personnel.

    + Oversee readings and make observations to detect steam and electrical generation systems issues, and take the required action to correct those issues.

    + Adjust controls to respond to requested levels of steam and electricity generation production and start/stop generation equipment as needed.

    + Work with plant operators, maintenance trades, contractors, and others to coordinate and ensure safe system shutdowns, startups, and energy control/Lockout-Tagout of steam and electrical generation systems and equipment.

    + Ensure the integrity and safety of the steam and electrical generation systems equipment before and during operation for compliance with MN Rule 5225

    + Operate steam and electrical generation systems to maintain production to specified levels and adjust as needed.

    + Ensure the integrity and safety of the campus steam distribution system equipment before and during operation.

    + Maintain the general boiler room and process areas, and ensure required supplies are available.

    What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

    Required to be considered :

    + High school diploma or GED

    + State of MN Class 1, Grade A Boiler License

    + At least three (3) years of actual operating experience with the responsibility for the safe operation and maintenance of all classes of boilers, engines, and turbines and their appurtenances of not more than 500 horsepower or to operate as a shift engineer in a plant of unlimited horsepower, including at least two years of experience in operating such engines or turbines.

    Desired Qualifications

    + Experience operating and maintaining medium-voltage (4,160 V, 3-phase) turbine generators, distribution connection syncing, and controls is highly desirable.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of MN State statutes and rules relating to boiler room equipment operations, inspection, and maintenance.

    + Knowledge of safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of boiler equipment and associated equipment.

    + Knowledge of safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of medium voltage electrical generation and distribution equipment up to 4,160v.

    + Knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition control software systems.

    + Knowledge of Outlook, SharePoint, and basic word processing programs.

    + Skills in troubleshooting complex process issues related to steam generation and distribution systems.

    + Skilled in using hand and power tools related to operations and maintenance of steam and electrical generation systems.

    + Ability to train new Power Plant Engineers in steam and electrical generation systems.

    + Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

    + Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas or issues with supervisors and co-workers.

    + Ability to use computerized process control systems for monitoring and control.

    + Ability to keep an accurate and detailed daily shift log.

    + Ability to work with a cross-functional team, including co-workers, management, maintenance trades, contractors, and consultants.

    Working Conditions: Must possess the ability to work under adverse conditions such as confined spaces, loud work environments, heights, obnoxious smells, heat, cold, rain, and potentially hazardous areas. Uses common hand and power tools to operate and maintain plant equipment.

     

    Physical Requirements:Must have the physical capacity to safely lift and carry portable pumps, hoses, and other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances. Ability to climb ladders, descend/ascend stairs, grasp, bend, kneel, and reach. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Physically and medically able to be respirator certified.
