    Summary Western District of Pennsylvania | Western District of Pennsylvania This position is located in Pittsburgh, PA. Responsibilities The U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking an attorney for its Civil Division. This dynamic civil practice features a challenging mix of affirmative and defensive cases and represents a unique opportunity for an attorney seeking greater autonomy and litigation experience. The defensive civil docket includes defending the United States, its agencies and employees in complex employment, federal tort, constitutional, habeas corpus, and other significant cases and litigation. Civil attorneys also represent the United States as a plaintiff in affirmative civil enforcement cases addressing all types of fraud against the United States involving a wide variety of federal programs, including Medicare and Medicaid. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. See www.sss.gov. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: The Office seeks an attorney who has outstanding legal ability, high moral character, mature judgment and demonstrated excellence in civil trials. The ideal candidate will possess superior oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit superior judgment, and be able to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment, while balancing a high case load. Preferred qualifications include at least three to six years of post-J.D. litigation experience, including experience handling a variety of complex civil matters, first-chair federal trial experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility and public service. Additionally, a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case, is preferred. Excellent computer literacy skills and presentation skills are preferred. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement. Degree Additional Information Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $76,446 to $195,200 which includes 21.03% locality pay.
