We have an exciting opportunity for a Systems Administrator to join our our Magnetic Fusion Energy Division located in Torrey Pines (San Diego), CA.

With consultative direction and within an assigned functional unit, this position is responsible for applying advanced computational and data science principles to develop and maintain the smooth operation of multi-user computer systems in support of fusion energy research activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Develops and monitors the assigned organization's policies and standards for the use of office automation equipment and computing resources.
+ Ensures organization policies and standards are integrated with company policies and standards.
+ Duties include user account administration, maintaining documentation, system hardware and software installation, allocation of mass storage space, effectively securing computing resources, and backing up systems to provide data integrity.
+ Functions in a consulting and technical leadership role with management on short and long-term planning to ensure the strategic and operational effectiveness of information systems service delivery is maintained, including a strategy for national HPC centers and cloud resources.
+ Coordinates the assigned organization's electronic office systems activities, which may include: personal computers; server systems and associated software; and standard software products.
+ Analyzes new hardware and software, makes purchase recommendations, and plans and oversees the installation.
+ As a technical expert, responds to inquiries, identifies issues, and guides the development of innovative solutions to unusually complex and unique challenges. This involves close collaboration with domain scientists to develop and implement computational workflows and scientific software.
+ Makes internal and external presentations and represents the company as the primary spokesperson on external project(s).
+ May act as a lead and participate in the selection, development, and supervision of information technology professional and support staff, and train internal users.
+ Plans and manages day-to-day operation and maintenance of computer systems, including Windows,
+ Linux and Unix operating systems and applications.
+ Collaborates with research scientists and engineers to develop, implement, and optimize computational and data analysis software, tools, and workflows; assists in porting, benchmarking, and deploying complex scientific models.
+ Determines comprehensive solution(s) for unusually complex and unique system problems.
+ Troubleshoots and evaluates hardware and software.
+ Represents the organization as a primary technical contact with suppliers and vendors.
+ Functions in a consulting and leadership role with management in information system planning.
+ Manages the implementation of system changes or upgrades including deployment, resource requirements, testing, documentation, integration, and compliance and safety.
+ Develops plans for future installation and implementation of applicable hardware and software based on new technology.
+ Acts as a lead giving guidance and direction to professional staff and may participate in the planning, selection, retention, and development of staff.
+ Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
+ Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:
+ Typically requires a bachelor's degree in information technology or a related discipline and fifteen or more years of progressive professional experience in an information technology department primarily in systems administration.
+ May substitute equivalent working experience in the field in lieu of education. Must demonstrate a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of system administration theories, concepts and practices including but not limited to system design, installation, configuration and management, performance tuning and measurement, back-up, recovery (including disaster recovery planning and testing), Linux OS, TCP/IP and related protocols and network concepts, security/firewalls, web servers, virtual machines, and load balancing. Must have advanced knowledge of HPC, data science, and Cyberinfrastructure (CI) environments.
+ Must demonstrate advanced experience with designing and implementing complex computational workflows, code curation, and data management (including large datasets, multiple data formats, and metadata).
+ Experience with compiling and running MPI-based code is required. Experience in the intercontinental movement of large scientific datasets on ultra-high-speed networks is essential.
+ Must have project leadership skills including organizing, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating work assignments to meet project milestones or established completion dates.
+ Must be able to provide leadership in developing new processes or systems, resolve unusually complex technical problems, and serve as spokesperson or leader on projects.
+ Must be a technical expert in one or more information technology areas. Must be customer focused and possess:
+ the ability to identify issues, analyze and interpret data and develop innovative solutions to a variety of unusually complex problems;
+ excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills to accurately document, report, and present findings to a variety of audiences including senior management, domain scientists, and senior external parties;
+ excellent interpersonal skills to influence and guide all levels of employees, including senior managers, domain scientists, and senior external parties;
+ excellent computer skills.
+ Ability to work independently or in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
