    INTRODUCTION

    The School of Medicine (SoM) Dean’s Office seeks a Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) to provide expert consultation and complex support for over 800 employees across the School of Medicine Dean’s Office. Reporting to the Senior HR Business Partner, this role serves as a trusted advisor to leaders, managers, and staff, guiding the full employee lifecycle while ensuring compliance with university policies, collective bargaining agreements, and state/federal regulations. The position requires strong problem-solving, discretion, and customer service skills to navigate a diverse and highly complex academic medical environment that spans the five-state WWAMI region.

     

    The UW School of Medicine is the largest academic unit in the University of Washington with over 12,000 employees and an annual budget in excess of $2B. The Dean’s Office supports over 800 employees including the UW Medicine CEO/Dean of the School of Medicine, the Executive Vice Dean, six vice deans, eighteen associate deans, across over 25 unique business units of the School of Medicine and UW Medicine. This includes the added complexity of supporting staff throughout the five state WWAMI region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. Reflecting the Dean’s Office leadership position, the HRBP provides ad-hoc HR consultation to the HR staff embedded in the 31 SoM academic departments.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position requires significant organization, problem-solving, project management and communication skills with frequent and substantive interactions within and outside the Dean’s Office. Individual initiative, solid judgement, discretion regarding sensitive and confidential matters and superior customer service skills are all necessary for the tasks assigned. This position requires accuracy, efficiency, flexibility, creativity, and a desire to serve multiple stakeholders, while working within UW regulations.

    Dean’s Office Human Resource Management - 85%

    + Understand the organizational complexities of the Dean’s Office business units, including job types, reporting relationships, and responsibilities within the broader context of the SoM departments and University offices.

    + Advise and apply complex HR guidance to staff, including and major business leaders and executive leadership, aligned with School and University policies, procedures, and contracts.

    + Provide consultation on job description development to ensure alignment with School and University strategic priorities while meeting the operational needs of individual units and managers.

    + Provide advice and HR management to the full employee lifecycle in the SoM Dean’s Office.

    + Maintain thorough understanding of Workday transactions and functionality, including initiation, approvals, process-flows, downstream impacts, and business consequences.

    + Support the recruitment process for Dean’s Office positions from concept through hire. Balance setting expectations with managers while simultaneously promoting their needs with the central offices.

    + When directed, partner with the SoM Recruiter and SoM HR & Compensation Analyst to perform pay equity evaluations, evaluate recruitment strategies, and advance other initiatives; foster cross-pollination of ideas to drive innovative, effective solutions.

    + Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with central offices to ensure effective communication, alignment on priorities, and long-term partnership.

    Special Projects and Process Improvement 15%

    + Recommend and implement process improvements to streamline HR operations, strengthen quality control, and optimize solutions; regularly report on the progress of assigned projects and partner with colleagues to ensure successful outcomes.

    + Develop and maintain clear, consistent resources (policies, procedures, training materials, and communication templates) that improve efficiency and usability.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field.

    + At least two years of professional HR experience, preferably in a diverse, multi-faceted organization.

    Additional Requirements

    + Demonstrated knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and best practices, including personnel administration and recruitment.

    + Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential issues.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

    + Ability to engage collaboratively with SoM leadership, faculty, staff, and central offices, applying a proactive, service-focused approach to support a diverse and demanding client base.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + HR and payroll experience in a large university or similar setting.

    + Experience working with union and non-union employees, faculty, and student staff.

    + Knowledge of Washington State employment law and University of Washington HR policies.

    + Certification as a PHR or SHRM-CP.

    + Experience with Workday, SharePoint, and process improvement methodologies.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $61,368.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $89,592.00 annual
