Description:
Under the supervision of the pharmacist, assists in the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy, including preparation and distribution of medications to patients and patient care areas. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.
Assists Pharmacist in prescription order preparation/delivery.
• Receives and transcribes new orders and refill authorizations (not applicable to I/P Tech).
• Uses medication orders to identify, locate and pull appropriate quantity of medication needed.
• Prepares medication for dispensing.
• Packages medication order for delivery.
• Accurately requests refill authorizations from prescribers (or not applicable to I/P Tech).
• Delivers prescription orders to patients or patient care area under the direction of the Pharmacist.
Assists in maintaining medication and supply inventory.
• Assesses medication and supply inventory levels daily.
• Considers contractual agreements prior to ordering.
• Obtains appropriate order authorization, i.e., P.O. number.
• Orders medications and supplies from appropriate source (wholesaler vs. direct).
• Receives and checks in medications and supplies.
• Completes documentation of inventory received.
• Researches discrepancies and processes returns and credits.
• Codes and bills invoices to appropriate departments.
• Maintains necessary purchasing documentation for business and regulatory needs.
Performs computer data entry and print functions.
• Gathers information required to prepare prescriptions and/or other pharmacy functions.
• Enters accurate and complete data into computer system.
• Verifies and maintains up-to-date information.
• Prints labels and reports.
Initiates and completes sales transactions. (retail only)
• Identifies merchandise type and chooses correct cash register key.
• Operates cash register and MasterCard/ Visa machine.
• Receives payment and returns correct change to customer.
• Assures cash register has adequate amount of change.
• Completes ROA form when necessary.
• Prints cash register and credit card reports, reconciles each cash register daily and completes reconciliation form.
• Prepares deposit and delivers to designated point daily.
Performs private and third party billing functions.
• Post charges and documents activities in accordance with procedures.
• Corrects and re-submits rejections independently (not applicable for Inpatient Technician).
• Enters patient demographic and insurance coverage data to ensure minimal rejected paper claims (not applicable for Inpatient Technician).
• Communicates with billing office to ensure billing to secondary payer is completed (not applicable for Inpatient Technician).
Completes pharmacy department paperwork.
• Files paperwork on dispensed prescriptions.
• Delivers/distributes pharmacy paperwork or mails prescriptions as directed by Pharmacist.
• Reports medication errors to appropriate personnel.
• Accurately completes pharmacy data collection reports.
• Answers telephone and assists callers with inquiries that do not require a Pharmacist’s expertise.
• Refers calls to Pharmacist when appropriate.
• Assists in maintaining an organized and clean pharmacy.
Maintains floor stock medication levels in patient care areas. (inpatient only)
• Uses daily list(s)/label(s) to identify needed medications.
• Documents activities.
• Locates and pulls appropriate type and quantity of medication.
• Prepares medication.
• Delivers and refills accurate floor stock.
• Audits floor stock for exchange of outdated medications.
• Outdates – print Pyxis lists.
• Checks in order, puts the order away, places orders on weekends for medication we are out of.
Monitors activity of specially identified medications and processes as directed.
• Audits paperwork for completeness and accuracy.
• Addresses discrepancies with appropriate personnel.
• Tracks and assesses status of discrepancies and responses.
• Files documentation required for regulatory agency.
• Identifies issues and brings to attention of pharmacist.
Assists with training.
• Ensures that new employees are oriented to department and job and that competency is assessed and documented.
Assesses and makes decisions regarding income eligibility for medication assistance.
• Assesses eligibility for free or reduced cost medications.
• Communicates with other agencies to assess eligibility.
• Processes Indigent Programs applications.
• Notifies patients when medications arrive.
• Assists with problem solving as a patient advocate.
Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleauge health policies and procedures.
• Attends and completes employer required safety programs.
• Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.
• Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
• Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
• Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.
• Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
Education and experience:
+ High School Diploma or equivalent required
+ Current Pharmacy Technician Certification required.If driving, valid Iowa driver’s license. Registered with Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Technician or as a Pharmacy Intern within 30 days of hire.
