Description
Summary: The Shockwave Therapy Technician supports urology providers by performing non-invasive shockwave therapy treatments for patients with various urologic conditions, including erectile dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain. This role requires strong patient-care skills, technical proficiency, and the ability to follow clinical protocols to ensure safe, effective treatment delivery.
Primary Responsibilities:
+ Greet patients, verify identity, and review relevant medical history or contraindications.
+ Explain the shockwave therapy procedure, expected sensations, benefits, risks, and aftercare.
+ Position and prepare patients for treatment, ensuring comfort and safety.
+ Obtain informed consent when required.
+ Set up, calibrate, and operate extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) devices (radial or focused).
+ Select and adjust appropriate treatment settings, transmitters, intensity levels, and frequencies based on clinician instructions.
+ Apply gel and properly place the applicator to ensure effective energy transfer.
+ Deliver treatments following established clinical protocols or under the supervision of a licensed provider (PT, chiropractor, MD, etc.).
+ Monitor patient response during the session and adjust technique or settings as appropriate.
+ Document treatment parameters, patient tolerance, and any notable responses in the electronic medical record.
+ Communicate patient progress, concerns, or abnormal reactions to supervising clinicians.
+ Assist providers with assessments, follow-up planning, and other therapy modalities if trained.
+ Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent tissue damage, discomfort, or incorrect application.
+ Follow infection-control standards, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment between sessions.
+ Screen for contraindications (e.g., pregnancy, open wounds, pacemakers, active infection, cancer in the area).
+ Perform routine checks of shockwave units; ensure proper functioning and calibration.
+ Identify and report malfunctioning equipment, coordinate repairs or servicing.
+ Maintain inventory of consumables (gel, applicator caps, etc.).
+ Manage appointment scheduling, patient flow, and treatment room readiness.
+ Handle basic clerical duties such as intake forms, insurance documentation, or billing support.
+ Participate in staff meetings, training, and continuing education related to shockwave therapy.
+ Provide instructions on post-treatment expectations (mild soreness, activity restrictions, etc.).
+ Advise on recommended exercises or supportive therapies as directed by a clinician.
+ Answer patient questions and help ensure compliance with treatment plans
+ Contribute to treatment protocol development or quality improvement.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
+ High school diploma or GED required; medical assistant certification or similar healthcare training preferred.
+ Prior experience in a medical office, physical therapy, or urology setting is a plus.
+ Ability to learn and operate specialized medical equipment safely and confidently.
+ Strong communication and patient-service skills, with a calm and professional demeanor.
+ Detail-oriented with strong documentation and organizational abilities.
+ Comfort working with sensitive health topics and maintaining patient confidentiality.
