    Goals : The Director of Curriculum and Assessment is responsible for collaborating with the Chief Schools Officer to ensure that all Tapestry students benefit from a rigorous and engaging curriculum that is designed to help them develop their knowledge, skills, and character while also exposing them to authentic, project-based learning opportunities.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Director of Curriculum and Assessment ensures that Tapestry provides its students and families with a world-class K-12 educational experience. The DCA helps to do this by leading the development of Tapestry's K-12 curriculum and assessment strategy. In this role, the DCA manages the school's curriculum adoption process to select high-quality curriculum across all grades and content areas. In addition, the DCA works with Principals to establish expectations for lesson internalization so that teachers are actively involved in determining how to best leverage those curriculum resources to support their students. In this role, the DCA also develops a comprehensive assessment strategy to ensure that Tapestry leaders understand what students have learned and where they may need additional support. The DCA also plays a critical role in providing professional development to leaders and staff in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessments, data analysis and re-teaching. The DCA is a key member of the Tapestry's K-12 leadership team, Compass.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Curriculum

     

    + Designs the school's curriculum adoption strategy, including how curriculum materials will be used as part of the school's approach to producing outstanding achievement for students.

    + Ensures that the school develops a coherent K-12 strategy for how to provide students with authentic learning experiences, access to project-based learning and , at the same time, instruction that will ensure students can succeed on required assessment measures.

    + Facilitates the school's curriculum adoption process, including by identifying priority content areas or grade levels of focus each year; determining the criteria that will be used to review materials; and facilitating meetings with staff members to gather input into the selection process.

    + Partners with central office business staff members to purchase any necessary curriculum materials for campuses.

    + Develops professional development sessions to train instructional staff members, including Principals, coaches and teachers, on how to successfully implement curriculum resources.

    + Leads the creation of supplemental curriculum materials when necessary to ensure that schools are able to achieve the academic goals for our students.

    + Partners with Principals to ensure that the school continues to invest in developing a strong K-12 Crew curriculum that enables teachers to build strong relationships with students in support of their long-term social emotional and academic development.

    + Partners with Principals and the Chief Schools Officer to develop expectations for lesson internalization that ensure that teachers are prepared to deliver excellent lessons-and understand how they can effectively customize lessons to best support their students.

     

    Assessment

     

    + Designs the school's assessment strategy, including how assessments will be used as part of the school's approach to producing outstanding achievement for students- and ensures that students are supported to produce authentic pieces of high-quality work and engage in project-based learning.

    + Partners with Principals to ensure that formative assessments are in place to measure student progress towards end of year goals.

    + Leads the school's efforts to acquire, build and/or refine assessment materials as needed across priority grade levels and content areas.

    + Partners with central office business staff members to purchase any necessary assessment materials for campuses or to secure relevant contracts with outside assessment vendors or consultants

    + Develops professional development sessions to train instructional staff members, including Principals, coaches and teachers, on how to successfully build assessments, unpack existing assessments, administer assessments and monitor assessment administration.

    + Develops professional development sessions to train instructional staff members, including Principals, coaches and teachers, on how to successfully analyze and respond to assessment data, including by analyzing assessment results, designing assessment action plans, and planning targeted reteach lessons to address student misconceptions.

    + Leads the creation of supplemental assessment materials when necessary to ensure that schools are able to achieve the academic goals for our students.

    + Partners with Principals and the Chief Schools Officer to develop expectations for assessment administration, data analysis and response to data to ensure that teachers are prepared to leverage the data they collect to support the growth and development of students.

    Additional Duties

    + Serves as the school's testing coordinator for all state assessments, ensuring that all assessments are administered in ways that reflect the expectations of New York state and the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.

    + Leads the implementation of the school's report card and progress report systems, ensuring that students receive meaningful grades that reflect their mastery of knowledge and skills and the creation of high-quality work.

    + Develop an annual work plan that outlines how the school will incrementally improve its approach to curriculum and assessment each year.

    + Spends focused time with Principals and other instructional leaders at campuses each week that is designed to help each school successfully implement their work plan and achieve their annual goals.

    + Partners with the Chief Schools Officer and Chief Operating Officer to use the textbook funding from the city of Buffalo to purchase materials that align with Tapestry's academic initiatives.

    + Other tasks as needed as assigned by the Chief Schools Officer or Executive Director.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Master's degree in Education, Education Leadership, Curriculum Development, or Educational Administration or similar area required.

    + 5+ years professional experience in education and/or related fields required.

    + Successful past experience as an instructional leader that has helped drive high levels of student achievement and growth for students.

    + Familiarity with expeditionary learning and project-based learning is preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    + Unwavering belief that Tapestry's students can perform at the highest level academically.

    + Knowledge of best practices in curriculum, including, but not necessarily limited to, the ability to identify high-quality, externally validated curriculum; how to support the successful implementation of high-quality instructional materials; and how to strategically modify curriculum to ensure it best meets the needs of students.

    + Knowledge of best practices in assessment, including, but not necessarily limited to, the selection of high-quality, externally validated assessments; how to build high-quality formative assessments that align to priority end of course assessments; and how to analyze student work to construct effective re-teaching plans.

    + Excellent organization skills, including the ability to set priorities, manage their time, and ensure the successful completion of long-term projects.

    + Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate information verbally and in writing.

    + Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, including with a wide variety of diverse stakeholders.

    + Knowledge of instructional best practices frequently used in charter schools sponsored by the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Work is performed primarily in an office environment, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion including walking, bending, standing. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers to complete typing, filing, and data entry. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Position requires talking, walking, driving, speaking and comprehension of complex matters.
