    Job Overview

     

    Directs and coordinates day-to-day activities of the metal finishing department, including plating operations, wastewater treatment and chemical maintenance. Ensures all operations are performed safely and in compliance with all company, local, state, and federal requirements. Oversees supervisor(s) and leads in ensuring proper processing of materials, maintenance of tank chemistries, scheduling and directing of labor, and supporting manufacturing flow and lean processes by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate and technical personnel.

     

    A Day In The Life

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    Drives safety culture through attitude, activities, and strict enforcement of safety procedures, training, and PPE compliance. Seeks continuous improvement and reacts immediately to identified risks as gleaned from JSAs, employee/Safety Committee input, and general observation.

     

    Ensures environmental compliance through enforcement, continuous improvement, and continual auditing of all process monitoring and waste handling to ensure company, local, state, and federal standards are met.

     

    Responsible for oversight of the operation of waste treatment systems (air and water) in compliance with company policies and local, state, and federal government requirements.

     

    Capability to serve as Incident Commander or as back-up to the Incident Commander in the event of a significant spill or similar incident, demonstrating strong leadership, decision-making skills, and ownership of the safety and security of the facility.

     

    Enforces and maintains a high standard of cleanliness and housekeeping within the department to ensure a safe, healthy and well-maintained workplace environment.

     

    Establishes procedures and processes to ensure production orders and/or schedules are maintained in order to meet production goals of the facility and to minimize late orders and past due backlog.

     

    Ensures there are well planned production operations, established priorities, and sequences for manufacturing products.

     

    Develops quality process (with the cooperation of the Quality department) to minimize rework and increased cost of quality.

     

    Communicates with other operations leaders to ensure proper flow of materials and to ensure schedule compliance and past-due work order minimalization/elimination.

     

    Drives continuous improvement projects in the department using Lean Manufacturing principles including visual management boards, kaizen events, 5-S, TPM, and other elements of the Hubbell Manufacturing System.

     

    Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.

     

    Inspects machines and equipment to ensure specific safe and efficient operational performance and optimum utilization.

     

    Develops or revises standard operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards.

     

    Resolves employee concerns and interpersonal conflicts or submits unsettled issues to Department Manager for action.

     

    Seeks to continually improve processes, eliminate process waste, and drive excellence in operations.

     

    Compiles, stores, and retrieves production data.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Directly supervises a group of supervisors, engineers, and production leads in the Metal Finishing Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training supervisors and engineers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Education and/or Experience

    The successful candidate will have a very strong background in the following:

    Metal finishing processes (particularly tin plating on copper and aluminum), chemical and mechanical etching, and annealing are of particular value to the role.

     

    Strong understanding of wastewater treatment and associated environmental regulations.

     

    Chemical engineering or significant leadership experience in metal finishing processes.

     

    Hazardous waste storage and handling, particularly experience with strong acids, caustics, and related strong chemistries.

     

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

     

    Ability to read and comprehend scientific reports and specifications related to the plating processes, waste storage and generation, and environmental sampling.

     

    Experience leading a team or department in a metal finishing or plating environment.
