    Overview

     

    Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO+I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

     

    The Datacenter Engineering Mechanical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs in the AMER region.

     

    This engineer provides key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be a professional mechanical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter mechanical engineering, design, construction, and operations. They will be responsible for the technical review, analysis and coordinating the delivery of complex datacenter mechanical systems, associated controls, and overall topology. This position requires a detailed understanding of datacenter HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls.

    Responsibilities

    + Collaborate with global and regional mechanical/BAS teams to understand and develop the datacenter (DC) mechanical designs from basis of design (BOD) to issue for constructions (IFC) for new DC project builds.

    + Lead and direct consultants in the design and coordination of the mechanical systems with other disciplines, associated controls, and overall topology for our datacenter builds.

    + Lead mechanical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms along with key stakeholders within Microsoft.

    + Responsible for overseeing the specification and drawing development detailing all mechanical systems, and overall network topology and communication protocols required.

    + Specification and design development, detailing the sequence of operation for the mechanical systems and overall drawings and specifications for our mechanical topology.

    + Support the Operations teams with solutioning and work with Operations and equipment vendors for implementation.

    + Assist in commissioning validating performance, quality, and reliability.

    + Give technical direction to our vendors who include professional mechanical engineers.

    + Support retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities.

    + Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.

    + Provide guidance to staff augmentation teams (which includes A/Es and A/E Consultants).

    + Provide remote site support for construction teams.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    + Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

    Other Requirements:

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

     

    + Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

    + Registered Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering.

    + 3+ years’ experience as a lead engineer with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large-scale and complex mechanical engineering systems (Data Centers, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries).

    + Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.

    + Demonstrated technical and practical working knowledge with respect to the understanding and applications of HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls.

    + Familiarity with CFD modelling.

    + Demonstrated knowledge of building codes and regulations.

    + Knowledge of mechanical and control systems related to data center environments.

    + Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.

    + Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.

    + Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.

    + Experience with using Bluebeam Revu and associated products.

    + Demonstrated experience with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

    Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
