Summary:
The Nurse Manager, Med/Surg & Orthopedic Program provides leadership and operational oversight for the Med/Surg Unit & Total Joint Team and Comprehensive Joint Replacement (CJR) Program while ensuring excellence in patient care, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance. This role combines the clinical coordination of the orthopedic service line with managerial responsibility for nursing operations, staff development, and performance improvement across designated orthopedic units. The Nurse Manager collaborates with surgeons, hospital leadership, and multidisciplinary teams to sustain The Joint Commission (TJC) Disease-Specific Certification (DSC) for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement, ensuring continuous readiness and adherence to standards of practice.
Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Coordination
+ Serves as the operational lead for the Total Joint and CJR programs, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-centered care.
+ Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of orthopedic care pathways and protocols.
+ Organizes and leads interdisciplinary meetings with surgeons, administration, and staff to review performance metrics, patient outcomes, and quality goals.
+ Analyzes data and trends related to orthopedic program performance; develops and implements action plans for improvement.
+ Manages the Disease-Specific Certification process, maintaining compliance with all Joint Commission standards.
+ Leads the development and implementation of education related to new standards, performance elements, and practice guidelines.
Nursing Operations & Management
+ Provides twenty-four-hour, seven-day operational oversight for assigned orthopedic units.
+ Ensures the planning, maintenance, and evaluation of nursing standards, policies, and quality improvement activities.
+ Conducts regular patient rounds and collaborates with staff to ensure patient satisfaction and safe care delivery.
+ Develops and monitors budgets, staffing plans, productivity metrics, and resource utilization.
+ Ensures adequate staffing and appropriate staff assignments based on competency and patient acuity.
+ Oversees recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and professional development of nursing staff.
+ Holds staff accountable for performance, attendance, and compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and collective bargaining agreements.
+ Leads staff meetings and safety huddles focusing on quality, patient safety, and satisfaction.
+ Monitors compliance with infection control, medication administration, and risk management practices.
Quality, Performance, and Education
+ Initiates and manages the Performance Improvement Plan annually, tracking key performance indicators.
+ Coordinates and documents required performance measures on the Joint Commission site.
+ Collaborates with staff and leadership on quality initiatives, patient experience improvement, and cost reduction efforts.
+ Provides ongoing education to staff and patients related to orthopedic procedures, recovery expectations, and care coordination.
+ Serves as a liaison between the nursing team, physicians, and administration to promote continuous quality improvement.
Regulatory and Compliance
+ Ensures compliance with TJC, CMS, and NYSDOH standards.
+ Leads readiness activities for surveys and site visits related to orthopedic programs.
+ Maintains all required documentation, reports, and data submissions related to Disease-Specific Certification and CJR participation.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
+ Minimum of five years of nursing experience in an acute care or orthopedic setting, including two years in a leadership or coordination role.
+ Experience in program development, quality improvement, or certification readiness (preferred).
+ Experience collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
Education:
+ Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s preferred.
+ Additional education in healthcare administration, physical therapy, or care coordination desirable.
Licenses / Certifications:
+ Current New York State RN license required.
+ BLS and ACLS certification required.
