Job Description
The NYC Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for the position of Deputy Chief of our Ethics & Compliance Division. This Division counsels and trains City employees and elected officials on legal ethics, representation, privilege, and sanctions matters. The Division also is responsible for counseling on a wide array of federal, State, and local compliance matters to mitigate risk to City operations and finances and supervises the City-wide Medicare Secondary Payer compliance program. Additionally, the Division serves as the Conflict of Interest Board liaison, ensuring Law Department employees’ compliance with Chapter 68 restrictions and filing requirements. In addition to these counseling roles, Division attorneys also handle employee discipline matters, represent City attorneys in disciplinary proceedings before the Attorney Grievance Committees, and represent assistant district attorneys before the New York State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct.
The Deputy Chief assists the Chief in the oversight of the work of the division in all practice areas and with the management of the Division’s 10 staff members. The Deputy Chief counsels and trains on a vast array legal ethics, conflicts, representation, privilege, and sanctions matters as well as federal, State, and local compliance matters. The Deputy Chief may also represent City attorneys in attorney grievance proceedings.

Qualifications
Because our mission is to provide clear and sound guidance to our myriad of clients, we are looking for a candidate committed to public service with a demonstrated history of substantial legal experience, exceptional judgment, and strong decision-making skills. Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills are required, as are strong oral communication skills. The ideal candidate will possess experience in successfully leading a team of attorneys and legal support professionals, and understand how to collaborate across differences, while retaining strong team support. Candidates should be creative problem-solvers who are adept at counseling and training. Experience in compliance matters is strongly preferred. Knowledge of legal ethics and Chapter 68 of the New York City Charter also is preferred. Finally, candidates should have a minimum of 8 years of legal experience, must have graduated from an ABA accredited law school, and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar.
