Position Summary
Saint John's Prep School invites applications for the provisional position of Assistant Nordic Ski Coach to begin immediately.
Since its founding in 1857, Saint John’s Preparatory School has provided exceptional education in the Catholic Benedictine tradition. Saint John's Preparatory School is a Catholic/Benedictine, co-educational, day and boarding college preparatory school for students in grades 6-12, with boarding options beginning in the 9th grade. Saint John's Prep is located on the 3,000 acres of woods and lakes of Saint John's University's campus in central Minnesota. Prep has continuously dedicated itself to both educational development and personal formation.

The Assistant Nordic Ski Coach supports the Head Coach in all facets of the Saint John's Prep Nordic Ski program, which includes athletes from grades 7 through 12. The Assistant Coach will play a key role in developing student-athletes in both Classic and Skate techniques, fostering sportsmanship, and promoting a lifelong appreciation for Nordic skiing, consistent with the school's mission and values. The Assistant Nordic Ski Coach reports directly to the Head Nordic Ski Coach and the Director of Activities.
Responsibilities
Coaching and Athlete Development
+ Assist the Head Coach in the planning, organization, and execution of daily practices, dryland training, and in-season practices.
+ Provide high-quality instruction and technical feedback in both Classic and Skate techniques to athletes of varying skill and experience levels.
+ Implement specific drills and training sessions to improve endurance, strength, technique, and race strategy.
+ Act as a positive role model and mentor, emphasizing character development, sportsmanship, academic excellence, and adherence to the Saint John's Prep Student Activity Code.
+ Assist with pre-season conditioning programs as directed by the Head Coach.
Program Operations and Logistics
+ Assist with ski preparation and waxing for both training and competition.
+ Attend all scheduled practices and competitions, including weekend meets and sectional/state championships.
+ Support the safe transportation of athletes to and from events. This may require driving a school van/bus (if licensed and approved).
+ Assist the Head Coach with administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate attendance records, equipment inventory, and managing student eligibility.
+ Supervise student-athletes at all times, ensuring a safe and positive training environment.
+ Assist in the inventory, maintenance, and ordering of team equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
Communication and Administration
+ Maintain open, timely, and consistent communication with the Head Coach, student-athletes, parents, and the Athletic Director.
+ Work collaboratively with other coaches and school staff to support the overall athletic program.
+ Ensure all program activities comply with Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) rules and regulations.
+ Attend all necessary coaches' meetings and training sessions as required by the school and the MSHSL.
Qualifications
Required
+ Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for Nordic Skiing, including both Classic and Skate techniques.
+ Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
+ Ability to work effectively with middle and high school students, parents, and colleagues.
+ Successful completion of a background check as required by Saint John's Prep School.
+ Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain immediately upon hire).
Preferred
+ Previous coaching experience in Nordic Skiing at the high school, club, or collegiate level.
+ Experience with race-day ski waxing and equipment maintenance.
+ Valid Minnesota driver's license with appropriate endorsement for driving school vehicles.
