This is a dynamic role that includes cross-training in both Medical-Surgical (ACU) and Emergency Department settings.

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Professional Staff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
+ Applies nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment.
+ Develops daily goals and holistic care plans with patient involvement.
+ Demonstrates critical thinking to identify clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs.
+ Communicates effectively with care teams; translates patient condition and negotiates care changes.
+ Maintains comprehensive documentation to support caregiver communication.
+ Aligns care with national standards, organizational goals, and patient safety initiatives.
+ Builds caring, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
+ Participates in quality improvement efforts and identifies opportunities for improvement.
+ Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to enhance clinical care and influence care plans.

+ Assesses patient data and interprets information to identify age-specific care needs.
+ Provides care according to department policies and procedures.
+ Minimum 1 year of experience required; BSN preferred.
+ Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with all stakeholders, including patients and families.
+ Works effectively in complex environments with multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.
+ Exhibits good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
+ Leads others in applying the nursing process through strong critical thinking skills.
+ Demonstrates mobility, visual/manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire or transfer.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ Registered Nurse (RN) Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
+ Act 34
+ UPMC approved national certification preferred.
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
