JOB DESCRIPTION:
Position Summary:
The Laboratory Supervisor is a working supervisor responsible for overseeing all areas of testing in the free standing ED including limited hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, point of care testing, and emergency release of blood products plus other related daily operations of the clinical laboratory within a freestanding Emergency Department. The supervisor will also work the bench 1–2 days per week to maintain technical proficiency and support workflow.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Oversight
• Supervise and coordinate all laboratory activities within the ED, including specimen collection, processing, and testing.
• Perform bench work 1–2 days per week, including limited hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, POCT, and emergency blood product release.
• Maintain adequate inventory of reagents, supplies, and blood products.
Quality & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with CAP and state regulations.
• Monitor quality control, proficiency testing, and instrument maintenance.
• Implement and enforce safety protocols and infection control measures.
Staff Management
• Schedule and supervise laboratory personnel, ensuring coverage for all shifts.
• Provide training, competency assessments, and ongoing education for staff.
• Foster a positive work environment and address performance issues promptly.
Communication & Collaboration
• Serve as the primary point of contact for ED physicians and nursing staff regarding laboratory services.
• Coordinate with the main laboratory for confirmatory testing and specialized procedures.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
Emergency Preparedness
• Oversee emergency release of blood products in accordance with established protocols.
• Ensure readiness for disaster situations and maintain compliance with transfusion safety standards.
This position requires oversight of 24/7 operations Monday – Friday dayshift, and as needed to cover nights and weekends. This position is located at:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Graduate of an approved program in Medical Technology or Bachelors Degree in one of the biologic, chemical or physical sciences is required.
* Minimum of three (3) years experience as a Medical Technologist in a hospital setting is necessary.
LICENSURE:
• Must be licensed as a Medical Technologist in the State of Florida in the area(s) supervised. Hold Florida Supervisor’s license in the area(s) supervised or be eligible for supervisory licensure within two years.
• National certification preferred i.e. ASCP, HEW, NCA, ASMT, AAB or equivalent.
