DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented **School to Work - Engineering** student to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in **Troy, MI** .
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
• **Advance Innovation Projects**
You’ll support engineers in developing cutting-edge mechatronic systems and mechanical components, directly contributing to the evolution of Cummins-Meritor products.
• **Hands-On Testing Experience**
By assisting in vehicle and lab-based R&D testing, you’ll help validate new designs and technologies, ensuring they meet performance and safety standards.
• **Data-Driven Insights**
Your work analyzing sensor data will help uncover performance trends and inform engineering decisions, bridging the gap between raw data and actionable insights.
• **Design Optimization**
Through clearance studies and CAD modeling, you’ll help refine component designs for better fit, function, and manufacturability.
• **Programming for Engineering Solutions**
Writing code in C/C++, MATLAB, or Python will allow you to automate tasks, simulate systems, and support data analysis—enhancing engineering efficiency.
• **Technical Documentation & Reporting**
Your engineering reports will communicate findings and recommendations, contributing to knowledge sharing and informed decision-making across teams.
• **Benchmarking & Competitive Analysis**
By assisting in product benchmarking, you’ll help identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in Cummins-Meritor’s offerings.
• **Simulation & Modeling Support**
Your involvement in FEA and dynamic modeling will aid in predicting product behavior under real-world conditions, reducing development time and cost.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
• **Strong Foundation in Engineering Principles**
Apply your academic knowledge in mechanical, mechatronics, or electrical engineering to real-world problems, especially in vehicle systems like brakes, axles, and suspensions.
• **Hands-On Technical Skills**
Be comfortable working in lab and vehicle testing environments, using tools for data acquisition, and performing physical tests to support R&D efforts.
• **Programming Proficiency**
Develop and apply coding skills in C/C++, MATLAB, or Python to automate tasks, analyze data, and support simulations or modeling.
• **CAD and Modeling Abilities**
Use 2D and 3D design tools (e.g., Pro-E or similar) to create drawings and models that support engineering change requests and design validation.
• **Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving**
Go beyond task execution—analyze sensor data, perform clearance studies, and contribute to benchmarking and simulation efforts with a critical eye.
• **Clear Communication Skills**
Write engineering reports, present findings, and collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
• **Teamwork & Adaptability**
Work well under supervision while engaging with various departments, showing initiative and flexibility in a dynamic engineering environment.
• **Curiosity & Continuous Learning**
Stay eager to learn from experienced engineers, ask questions, and seek to understand the “why” behind engineering decisions to grow professionally.
Education:
• Must be **at least** 16 years of age.
• **Current Enrollment** : You **must be a current student** in high school or in a college/university pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Compensation (for United States)
Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications and Skills:
+ Goes beyond task completion, demonstrates a proactive and analytical mindset by actively engaging in understanding the underlying principles of assigned projects and proposing insightful improvements.
+ Demonstrates capability and knowledge of basic mathematics and sciences.
+ Demonstrates written and oral communication skills, including presentation creation.
+ Strong teamwork and ability to interact with all levels of the organizations.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
+ Understanding of vehicle drivetrain components and their application is a plus
+ Familiarity with design software such as Pro-E is a plus.
+ Familiarity with data acquisition tools and activities is a plus.
+ Experience with C/C++, Matlab or python programming is a plus
