    About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

    The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

    Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

    Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

    Role Overview:

    The purpose of this position is to research and verify locations and parcel information for Antique Landfills for the Permits Branch and complete other projects assigned by the Antique Landfill Coordinator. This position will be responsible for the integration of archival records, ranging from the late 1960’s to the late 1990’s, with our modern digital recordkeeping, and for locating unknown waste deposits, based on those archival records.

    Hourly Rate:

    The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

    Essential Job Responsibilities:

    The essential duties and responsibilities of the incumbent are to perform the following:

    • Research parcel information and IDEM records found in IDEM files and databases.

    • Compile results to request a site entry to GIS and IDEM databases.

    • Compare historic hardcopy archives to records in our Virtual File Cabinet (VFC).

    • Prepare and send records to VFC.

    • Attend meetings with landfill representatives.

    • Read incoming documents and outgoing responses.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    • Become familiar with the landfills and the environmental regulations that apply to them.

    Additional Opportunities:

    • Visit a few Antique Landfills.

    • Learn landfill rules and guidance.

    • Learn environmental and regulatory concerns unique to Antique Waste.

    • Learn about fate and transport topics.

    • Meet with key stakeholders in the realm of state government.

    Preferred Experience

    The preferred incumbent will have a general knowledge of environmental science, or a career interest and/or college coursework in GIS, computer science, geology, engineering, or a similar field. The preferred incumbent will enjoy research aspects that include 50-year-old hardcopy documents and online digital documents.

    Requirements:

    Working knowledge of personal computers and software such as Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.

     

    • Ability to utilize the internet for research purposes and agency databases for documenting results.

    • Ability to review and evaluate technical reports and data.

    • Good written and verbal communication skills.

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
