    Role Overview:

    The IEDC is offering an exciting and challenging opportunity to work for the state and to learn through hands-on experience in public-sector communications, content development and project coordination, with exposure to high profile initiatives as well as through planned engagements with the Governor of Indiana, Secretary of Commerce and leadership at the IEDC.

     

    The IEDC Communications & Marketing team plays a critical role in telling these stories – highlighting the people, projects and partnerships that drive regional economic growth across the state. The IEDC Communications & Marketing Intern will support the department’s storytelling and communication efforts, reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Social Media and working closely with the broader team. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, organized self-starter and creative thinker who is eager to learn how strategic communications support economic growth and public service.

     

    The program will be 12 weeks long (May 11 through July 31) and 65% of the program will be day to day work dictated by the Intern Coordinator, 25% will be dedicated to the special project which will be presented by the Intern team at the end of the program, and 10% will be other engagements which include lunch & learns, meetings, tours and study reports.

    Salary Statement:

    The salary for this position is $18 per hour, based on a 40‑hour work week.

     

    A Day in the Life:

     

    Storytelling & Content Support

     

    + Assist with developing and drafting content for social media (e.g., drafting social media copy, graphics and assisting with photo and short-form video production), web, newsletters and other digital platforms.

    + Help identify regional stories highlighting talent, communities, businesses and economic development across the state.

    + Support content planning by drafting outlines, captions and basic graphics.

     

    Social Media & Digital Communications

     

    + Support the Senior Manager of Social Media with day-to-day content execution, scheduling and monitoring.

    + Assist with creating and gathering assets (e.g., photos, quotes and background information) for social media and digital campaigns.

    + Assisting with event coverage.

    + Help track engagement metrics and compile basic performance summaries.

     

    Project Coordination & Team Support

     

    + Assist with organizing materials, managing shared folders and maintaining project documentation.

    + Support cross-team collaboration by helping gather inputs from internal teams and external partners.

    + Research strategic communications (internal and external) from IEDC and other competing states for economic development

    + Support special projects tied to business announcements, events, campaigns and agency initiatives.

    + Assist the broader team with administrative and creative tasks as needed.

    + Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions and planning discussions.

     

    Special Project

     

    Every Intern will work closely with an IEDC team member to further the mission of the IEDC. The Intern team will brainstorm together to envision a joint project to better the State of Indiana to grow the states economy and collaborate throughout the summer to detail a plan to make the vision a reality. The Intern team will present the final project at the end of the program.

    What You'll Need for Success:

    + Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, political science or related field

    + Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with attention to detail

    + Curiosity in Indiana’s growth plan due to economic development

    + Familiarity with social media platforms and basic digital tools (e.g., content calendars, collaboration and design platforms) preferred

    + Highly organized and self-motivated

    + Strong sense of time management with the ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects with varying levels of importance

    + Ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives

    + Maintain confidentiality regarding IEDC issues

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
