About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
This position exists within the Wetlands and Stormwater Sections of the Surface Water and Operations Branch of the Office of Water Quality of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). The individual selected for this position will work with Stormwater and Wetlands staff that are responsible for administering stormwater and wetland regulatory programs.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Interns selected to work within the Wetlands and Stormwater Sections will gain knowledge of the regulatory process and scientific and technical principles for both program areas.
Duties assigned to this position will include working with the staff of the Wetlands and Stormwater Section. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
+ Perform field work with staff related to assessment of wetland resources and stormwater management.
+ Assist program staff (wetlands and stormwater) with processing and reviewing applications for construction projects, industrial facilities, 401 Water Quality Certifications, and State Regulated Wetlands.
+ Review and process applications and draft permit documents for review prior by Senior Program staff.
+ Assist with revision and development of program resource materials, including brochures, manuals and guidance documents. Duties will specifically include updating Sections of the Indiana Stormwater Quality Manual to ensure stormwater principles and practices are up to date. Complete data searches to incorporate new technology into the Stormwater Quality Manual. Incorporate provisions in applicable measures and principles that take into consideration requirements and conditions that are applicable to the wetlands program.
+ Perform research and assemble documentation that identifies water quality measures that will promote water quality through the use of stormwater quality measures that will protect wetlands and promote the use of artificial wetland measures in water quality enhancement and protection.
+ Update and/or develop fact sheets, program guidance, and other outreach materials associated with both wetlands and stormwater program initiatives.
+ Update the website for both program areas. The update will include checking existing functions, identification of additional resource information, and creating an interactive approach to learning about the importance of wetlands and stormwater management.
+ Assist with development of technical presentations and public outreach materials.
+ Assist both program staff with data management, including entering projects and facility information and compliance milestones into program databases and GIS site.
+ Assemble and scan program documents in for entry into the Agency Virtual File Cabinet and/or the program area public facing data system.
Job Requirements:
+ The intern for this position should possess a basic understanding of biological, wetland, soil science, hydrology, and/or natural resources.
+ Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, with individuals and in group situations.
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
