Position description
The Department of Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites application for the Director of the Institute of Urologic Oncology (IUO). This is a tenured position at the level of Associate or Full Professor.
The Director of the IUO will provide visionary leadership to advance clinical care, research, and education in urologic cancers. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Urology and the Executive Committee of the IUO, this role is responsible for shaping the strategic direction of the institute, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving innovation in patient-centered oncology services. The Director will serve as a key departmental and institutional leader, promoting excellence in academic and translational research, oversee clinical trials, mentor faculty and trainees, and expand the institute’s scope and reputation.
Established in 2014, the IUO is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary home for high-volume urologic oncologists with collaborative basic and translational research, and a track record of innovative and practice-changing clinical trials. Endowed with funds to support its mission, the new Director will have resources available for development of new programs and hiring of key scientists and clinicians.
Responsibilities:
• Lead strategic planning and program development for the IUO.
• Oversee clinical operations, ensuring high-quality, innovative, evidence-based care across all urologic cancer services.
• Promote and support collaborations and partnerships with Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, basic research initiatives, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer center (JCCC), including clinical trials, translational science, and outcomes research.
• Re-establish a working multi-disciplinary Board of Directors for the IUO and supervise regular quarterly meetings. Inaugurate a board of “Friends of IUO”.
• Recruit and mentor faculty, trainees, and staff to build a dynamic and inclusive academic environment.
• Cultivate philanthropic and industry partnerships to support growth, scholarship, and innovation.
• Represent the institute in institutional, national, and international forums.
• Create active collaboration with the newly established multidisciplinary California Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy (CIII), in affiliation with UCLA Health.
This is a full-time faculty leadership position with rank and compensation commensurate with experience. The Director will maintain clinical, research, and teaching responsibilities in alignment with institutional goals. The candidate will be considered for The Spielberg Family Chair in Urologic Oncology

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
