    **Education –** Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Perfusion program required

    **Certification/License:** Must have the following at time of hire/transfer - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) - Texas Medical Board

    **Experience** – **1-2 Years of intermediate level Perfusion experience preferred** . We’re seeking professionals with a desire to teach, train cardiology fellows, and share perfusion knowledge base with fellows, team members, and students during clinical rotations.

     

    The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to help or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function.

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, analysis, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

    Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed.

     

    Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.

     

    Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.

     

    Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a manner that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.

     

    Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a manner that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.

     

    Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.

     

    Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

    KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

    Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.

     

    Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.

     

    Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.

     

    Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, of pressures and gas exchange within the body adult, pediatric and infant patients.

     

    Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products in association of support by extracorporeal circuits and devices.

     

    Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.

     

    Verbal and written communication skills.

     

    Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written perfusion protocols.

     

    Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal support devices and providing patient care.

     

    Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditationstandards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.

     

    Ability to work and cooperate in a flexible manner in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.

     

    Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.
