    Description of Job

    Seasonal Biological Field Technician

     

    Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Resource Stewardship Program is seeking a seasonal biologist to fill a field technician position based at our regional office in Grand Junction. Primary duties include performing biological field surveys for raptors, bats, pollinators, and invasive plants in Colorado’s state parks. This 40 hour per week position is mostly field based – performing biological surveys across the state of Colorado from our Grand Junction location. Office work performing data entry, data management, GIS and administrative tasks is included in this position’s responsibilities. This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of conservation biology, public land management, volunteer participatory science, and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.

    DUTIES:

    Responsibilities primarily involve performing biological field surveys in state parks across the state of Colorado. Duties include supporting the vegetation management program on vegetation mapping surveys, performing raptor nest monitoring in state parks on the Western Slope, monitoring bats through deployment of recording devices, and supporting pollinator monitoring projects in state parks. Duties also include data management, plan content writing, GIS cartography and administrative and programmatic support tasks. Work skills that are acquired through this work include tablet computer mapping in Colorado’s state parks using ESRI Field Maps and Survey123, biological monitoring skills, deploying bat recording devices, using bat recording analysis software, volunteer management, GIS analysis, sensitive and rare species management, production of training & education materials, and administrative duties. Travel to state parks across the state of Colorado for a full week at a time is a primary component of the duties of this position. Vehicles and gas, most camping gear, and field gear are provided. Per diem for meals is also provided.

     

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

    Applicant should have a background in ecology, wildlife, botany, natural resources, volunteer management, GIS or other natural resource sciences; as well as be proficient with Microsoft Office applications. Proficiency with raptor identification and ESRI GIS products is preferred. Specific experience with Field Maps for ArcGIS is very helpful. Good organizational skills, interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work with autonomy are required. The ability and desire to travel for up to a week at a time to state parks across the state. Training in survey methods and data entry will be provided.

    Anidealcandidate will have:

    + Knowledge of wildlife and vegetation known to inhabit Colorado and experience with wildlife and/or vegetation sampling techniques.

    + Experience using ESRI Field Maps to collect biological data in an outdoor field setting.

    + Raptor identification skills.

    + Experience with deployment of Song Meter Bat units.

    + Experience performing invertebrate surveys.

    + Experience working with volunteers.

    + Experience with data entry and maintaining data.

    + Strong work ethic, be organized and have the ability to work in a professional setting both independently and on teams.

    + Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, develop reports and present information both orally and in writing.

    + Understanding of recreation, natural resource and public land management principles and an understanding of how natural sciences relate to land management.

    + Experience with and/or enthusiasm for spending consecutive days and nights performing field work during the course of a work week and traveling to state parks across Colorado.

    + Passion for working outdoors and excitement for working for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

    + Must have (or obtain) a Colorado Driver's license.

     

    This position provides a great opportunity to gain experience in biological field work/data collection, GIS, protected species management, resource management planning, and conservation in a practical real world setting.     Currently, temporary employees of the state of Colorado are not eligible for health benefits, but do accrue paid sick leave throughout their employment. Employees are eligible to contribute to a 401k program and the state PERA retirement fund.

    Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

    To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:

    + Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

    + Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

    + Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
