Job Description

The Diener / Autopsy Assistant plays a vital role in supporting pathologists and medical examiners during autopsies and postmortem examinations. This position is responsible for preparing the autopsy suite, assisting with autopsy procedures, and maintaining cleanliness and proper biohazard protocols. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, respect for decedent handling, and adherence to confidentiality and regulatory compliance.

+ Prepares the autopsy suite and all required instruments and materials; assists the pathologist during postmortem examinations by positioning the body, opening and closing body cavities, removing organs, and collecting specimens while maintaining proper labeling and documentation.

+ Ensures respectful and secure transport of deceased individuals to and from the morgue and other designated areas, maintaining chain-of-custody protocols and handling all remains with professionalism and dignity. Assists in documenting autopsy findings through notes, photography, and data entry; ensures accurate labeling, tracking, and storage of specimens and evidence collected during examinations.

+ Cleans, disinfects, and maintains the autopsy suite and all tools and equipment in accordance with infection control, OSHA, Joint Commission and NYS Department of Health, and departmental standards to ensure a safe and sterile environment.

+ Adheres to all regulatory, privacy, and safety standards including HIPAA, OSHA, and institutional policies; maintains confidentiality and demonstrates professionalism and emotional resilience in all aspects of decedent care and interaction with medical personnel.
