The Division has a workforce of over 600, with 100 staff and 500 faculty, and is known for outstanding research, teaching and patient care.
Our clinical work spans 9 outpatient clinics at HMC and UWMC, across neighborhood clinics located throughout Puget Sound, and inpatient care at 4 hospitals in Seattle.
GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $110m. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.
The University of Washington’s Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Research Scientist/Engineer Principal position to be based at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). This position would have research responsibilities at Harborview Medical Center. This position would work closely with Dr. Paul Crane, MD, MPH and investigators from the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study and its network of ancillary studies focused on epidemiological investigations impacting older adults in general and neurodegenerative conditions in particular.
The Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study is a landmark longitudinal cohort study of older adults in the Seattle area begun in 1994 and that is still enrolling new participants. It follows people to identify incident cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. ACT is one of several landmark studies of older adults, and many initiatives seek to leverage combined resources to address important scientific questions. The Research Scientist / Engineer will be well positioned to serve as a collaborator and leader on these initiatives, including serving as PI, Multiple PI, or co-investigator on grant applications resulting from these collaborations.
The Research Scientist/Engineer Principal will interact extensively with ACT study data. The data available for analyses arise from a broad range of disciplines. Recent examples include air pollution, ophthalmology, central auditory processing, traumatic head injury, neuroimaging, whole genome sequence data, and cell-type specific omics data from a linked project with the Allen Brain Institute. The Research Scientist/Engineer will be expected to learn quickly, ask good questions, and provide high quality epidemiological analysis. This position would join existing groups focused on analyses for manuscripts as well as groups developing proposals for new funding initiatives, and would be expected to provide senior level epidemiological supervision of research scientists pursuing analyses and write-ups of a variety of ACT-related projects. This will include first and senior authorship opportunities, as well as other authorship positions, on multiple ACT-related manuscripts each year.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
_Scientific Development and Conduct of Research (70%)_
+ Apply extensive and diversified knowledge of scientific research principles and approaches in neurodegenerative conditions, geriatric conditions, cognitive impairment, and conditions that impact older adults.
+ Support the design, implementation, and execution of areas related to epidemiological investigation and research.
+ Developing sophisticated research methods and approaches to solve complex research program aims, and then effectively executes individual or collaborative work plans.
+ Work together with intradisciplinary groups of investigators to develop preliminary data for grant proposals, publish manuscripts, and pursue grant funding as principle investigator, multiple principle investigator, and/or co-investigator, across many funding opportunities.
+ Participate in strategic planning of research programs and project to meet scientific or technical aims.
+ Play a key role in the acquisition of research funding through new idea generation and working with ACT faculty and staff, and people affiliated with ACT ancillary studies in the scientific development of research projects.
+ Significant involvement in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees. These may include significant involvement with MELODEM, the Advanced Psychometrics Workshop, the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, and many others.
+ Understanding various complex data streams used in research programs and projects; effectively evaluating data uses and limitations; and designing research approach for successful data analyses.
+ Being primary author or key contributor on major reports, products, papers, presentations and peer reviewed journals.
_ACT Study Program Planning and Management (30%)_
+ The Research Scientist / Engineer Principal will be a co-investigator on the ACT parent grant, participating as a member of the Data and Analysis Core. This will include regular meetings, seminar opportunities, journal clubs, and collaboration with other members of the Core. Together with others in the Data and Analysis Core, this person will ensure high level senior epidemiological support for various ACT-related analyses and proposals.
+ The Research Scientist / Engineer Principal will be a co-investigator on the recently funded RECARDO grant focused on real world data and Alzheimer’s disease. This will include regular meetings and opportunities to collaborate with investigators across the dozen institutions involved with RECARDO.
+ Quality and Quantity: knows what results are important and strives to achieve those results; is organized and efficient; directs each relevant team in thorough, accurate and reliable results and service; establishes mechanisms for reviewing quality and quantity of work and creates feedback loops.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
+ PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related plus six years of experience to include experience with advanced epidemiological methods, including successfully planning and managing all aspects of research projects and operations.
_Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration._

+ Demonstrated experience and skills in building positive and productive collaborative relationships and ability to work with teams to meet deadlines under tight time constraints.
+ An effective approach to managing key networks and relationships, investigative teams and staff demonstrating an appropriate balance between empowerment, support and assertiveness.
+ Ability to write advanced manuals and project documentation, as well as author executive reports, journal articles, and sections of grant proposals.
+ Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, writing and language skills, and technical editing skills.
+ Resilient and able to work under pressure.
+ Adaptable to working as a leader of a small team, a leader of a large team, and a collaborator with small, medium, and large-sized teams, with flexible configurations that will vary from project to project.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Specific experience with ACT study data and/or data from Kaiser Permanente Washington records is highly desirable.
+ Given the opportunity to lead and supervise data analysis projects in collaboration with junior investigators, specific experience teaching epidemiology methods is highly desirable.
