    Title: Education Specialist

     

    Unit: Northern Forest Institute for Conservation Education and Leadership Training (NFI), Newcomb, NY

     

    Salary: $51,000-$54,000 Annually Commensurate with Qualifications

     

    This position is based full-time at SUNY-ESF's Newcomb Campus (Huntington Wildlife Forest) in Newcomb, NY. 12852. The Town of Newcomb is 3 hours northeast of Syracuse, NY.

     

    The Education Specialist assists in day-to-day management of NFI Outreach and Education programming; including daily operation of NFI-operated Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC); outreach coordination and contacts; design, development and delivery of educational programs; communications and web presence for NFI and AIC; Executes special assignments as identified by NFI leadership.

    Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    + Lead and/or assist in the design, development and delivery of educational programming

    + Lead and/or assist in the development and/or production of educational products

    + Maintenance of existing program contacts through timely communications and follow-up

    + Development of additional/new program contacts through identification, contact, cultivation and follow-up

    + Management of program calendar

    + Management of program logistics

    + Hosting programs at Newcomb Campus facilities

    + Coordination and supervision of volunteers and interns

    + Travel to regional schools, agencies, institutions and organizations for meetings and/or to provide programming

    + Work schedule includes weekends and occasional nights

    + Participation in meetings and conferences as NFI representative

    + Identification of and collaboration in pursuit of funding opportunities for educational programs

    Job Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in Environmental Interpretation, Environmental Science, Informal Science Education, Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, or Natural Resource Management

    + Demonstrated work experience using interpretive approaches in informal science education

    + Demonstrated natural history knowledge of flora, fauna, and ecology of northern forest ecosystems

    + Demonstrated experience with common work-place collaboration, word processing, graphic design and desk-top publishing software

    + Demonstrated experience with social media use in marketing and promotion

    + Strong communication, interpersonal, and guest service skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Demonstrated natural history knowledge of Adirondack flora, fauna, and ecology of northern forest ecosystems

    + Demonstrated human history knowledge of Adirondack Park including public policy, regulatory and cultural history issues and impacts on Adirondack human communities

    + Previous or current experience with a nature or environmental educational center, with a job focus on program development, and delivery

    + Supervisory experience

    + High level of organization and reliability

    + Ability to work effectively unsupervised

    + Ability to work in an isolated environment; both geographic and workplace

    + Specific familiarity with Microsoft Office products including Teams, Word, PowerPoint and Excel

    + Specific familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
