Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer: Prototype Build Manager role at Meta Reality Labs helps bring new prototype hardware to life through internal, small-scale device builds within internal labs. This role is responsible for taking a design from partner hardware teams and turning it into reality. This position provides design feedback that aims to improve manufacturability, creates a detailed process flow for assembly and validation, and troubleshoots issues as they arise during the build. The team this role will be joining supports many of Meta’s current and future hardware products, presenting wide-ranging challenges and opportunities for growth. We are looking for a mechanical engineer who has successfully led projects through the development process, drawing on their technical background to work collaboratively with Partner Teams and propose solutions that optimize for cost, speed, or quality, and with a proven record of quality output, process development, and collaboration. They will also have proven experience in communicating to all levels of an organization – from management and higher-level strategy planning to the technicians and leads on a manufacturing floor. They are detail-orientated with robust communication skills and proven experience working in a highly visible and hands-on problem-solving environment. While they will have experience with the full product lifecycle cycle, they should be especially passionate about the early prototyping phase.

2. Partner with EE, PD and SW design teams to build the first article of a given prototype, including mechanical assembly and functional test procedure verification
3. Generate detailed work/assembly/test instructions that inform the team’s contract labor force as they move through the assembly process, ensuring a process that is repeatable and aimed at realizing design intent
4. Troubleshoot assembly issues as they arise and taking corrective action as appropriate in order to keep the build on schedule
5. Communicate with designers responsible for a given prototype—both proactively in order to drive design improvements before the build, and reactively to solve issues slowing progress
6. Support the day-to-day work of the technician workforce, helping them interpret work instructions, making calls on priorities in partnership with the team’s project managers and engineers, and spotting opportunities to improve the speed or quality of work
