Job Description:
The Instructor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine with subspecialty focus in Breast Pathology functions as an expert clinical and academic faculty member within the Department.
This position requires specialized expertise and recognized professional standing in Breast Pathology. The incumbent is appointed based on demonstrated expert authority, advanced diagnostic skills, and scholarly or clinical contributions that advance the Department’s clinical, academic, educational, and quality missions.
Requirements
+ Must be an M.D., D.O., or equivalent who is Board Certified or Board Eligible in Anatomic Pathology, or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty fellowship training in Breast Pathology.
+ Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Florida or eligible for a Florida Medical Faculty Certificate (MFC) to practice under institutional licensure guidelines.
+ Demonstrated advanced expertise in Breast Pathology, supported by scholarly activity, clinical leadership, strong educational track record, and other professional recognition.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Advanced, specialized knowledge in Surgical Pathology, with a focus on Breast Pathology with strong skills in complex diagnostic interpretation and intraoperative consultation.
+ Ability to function independently as a definitive diagnostic authority, rendering expert interpretations that directly impact patient care and treatment decisions.
+ Experience improving laboratory quality, safety, and efficiency through expert input, data-driven quality initiatives and process improvement, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
+ Knowledge of JCAHO, CAP and CLIA regulations and standards.
+ Ability to communicate complex diagnostic information effectively to clinicians, learners, and patients.
+ Knowledge of all hospital and service procedures and policies regarding hazardous material management, biohazard exposure and the use of universal precautions.
+ Perform clinical and translational research that advances the knowledge of breast diseases.
Job Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
Provide expert-level diagnostic services in Breast Pathology for patients at UMH, JMH, Sylvester Cancer Comprehensive Center, and affiliated sites. Perform gross examination, histologic and specimen radiological image interpretations, and integrated diagnostic reporting of Surgical Pathology specimens, including selection and interpretation of appropriate ancillary studies. Perform and interpret intraoperative frozen sections requiring specialized judgment. Participate in call coverage according to divisional assignments (when applicable). Serve as an expert consultant to clinical teams, providing guidance on complex Breast Pathology cases and diagnostic and treatment decision-making.
+ Actively contribute expert insight to multidisciplinary tumor boards and disease-site conferences. Provide educational lectures and advanced instruction to medical students, pathology residents, fellows, and faculty, drawing upon recognized subspecialty expertise.
+ Participate in structured educational activities within the department.
+ Contribute specialized expertise to collaborative clinical, translational, or applied research initiatives, including participation in grant-funded or sponsored research where appropriate.
+ Collaborate with investigators throughout the Medical Center on scholarly projects related to Breast Pathology.
+ Participate in departmental quality assurance activities, committees, and working groups. Maintain high standards of professional practice to support continued JCAHO, CAP, and CLIA accreditation Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with HIPAA and institutional policies. Attend and participate in departmental meetings, conferences, and academic events.
Working Environment:
The work is primarily performed in a hospital-based academic medical environment. A high level of professionalism, citizenship, and academic engagement is expected.
