    Job Description

    The Department of International Student Services has an outstanding opportunity for an International Student Advisor to join their team.

     

    Under the direction of the Associate Director of UWB’s International Student Services, this position is responsible for providing international student services, advising, and support for the UW Bothell Campus. The position requires staying up-to-date with federal and institutional policy to educate and provide quality service to students, staff, and the general public. The International Student Advisor will have to think critically about diverse situations and provide options or feedback, primarily to support student academic success.

     

    The International Student Advisor is a Designated School Official (DSO) for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The person in this position must have the ability to understand, apply and communicate complex immigration regulations and university policies. The authority given in this position affects multiple branches of the university, including the lives of students studying at UWB.

     

    Assists in maintaining institutional compliance with federal F-1 student requirements. The position is responsible for advising the entire F-1 student population, ensuring compliance and continuous enrollment. The university’s F-1 program is reliant on the International Student Advisor’s accuracy of information. The International Student advisor will assist students throughout admission, during their academic career, and for up to three years after a student has completed their degree.

    Job Duties-

    **Advising** :

    + Act as a contact for the international student population on campus.

    + Advise on U.S. immigration regulations and policies to students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

    + Cross-train with International Student Services team members to ensure all staff have a well-rounded general knowledge on all services offered by the office.

    + Independently or collaboratively plan and execute programming and one-on-one student meetings (e.g., the New Student Session, benefit workshops, academic risk).

    + Build and maintain relationships with academic units.

    Administration:

    + Create new SEVIS records for students requesting F-1 status.

    + Report SEVIS changes including (but not limited to) initial creation, registration, Curricular Practical Training, Optional Practical Training, STEM extension, Reduced Course Load, and Termination.

    + Independently process documents and reports.

    + Answer all government inquiries with colleagues and leadership.

    + Administer, plan, organize and present three comprehensive orientations for new international students per year.

    + Help develop and implement a calendar of cultural activities and events.

    + Create and maintain International Student Services procedure manuals.

    + Contribute to and/or be responsible for creation of publications, events, evaluation projects and other assignments.

    + Audit and suggest updated content of the International Student Services website.

    + Plan, contribute to, and implement short and long-term plans for International Student Services.

     

    Other Duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

    + Bachelor’s degree in international studies or relevant field and two years of experience with advising or teaching in a higher education or English language institute.

     

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Additional Requirements:

    + Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

    + Outstanding critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

    + Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with the public, students, faculty, and community members including those from various cultural and socio-economic groups.

    + Ability to collect data and create reports using database systems.

    + Presentation and advising skills.

    + Ability to work flexible hours.

    + Commitment to contributing to the University’s goals for diversity and fostering a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

    Desired Requirements:

    + At least 2 years of experience as a DSO or ARO, with an understanding of Student Information Systems and software and as an international student advisor or recruiter in a higher education setting.

    + Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies related to student records, information systems, admissions, and registration.

    + Documented experience communicating with international populations in an educational setting.

    Conditions of Employment:

    + Work is performed in an office setting.

    + May need to work beyond or outside of a typical 40-hour work week; this may include evenings and weekends.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $60,000.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $63,000.00 annual
