    Job Title: Welding Instructor** **Job Description

     

    As a Welding Instructor, you will play a pivotal role in developing the skills of welders and fabrication staff through hands-on instruction, coaching, and standardized training programs. Your expertise will ensure that welding practices meet safety regulations and quality standards while supporting production goals and continuous improvement.

    Responsibilities

    + Deliver structured training in MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding processes, including proper machine setup and technique.

    + Conduct hands-on demonstrations and supervise practice sessions to build competence and confidence.

    + Create and update training materials: SOPs, manuals, visual aids, and skills checklists tailored to shop requirements.

    + Assess trainee skills through practical tests and provide constructive feedback and development plans.

    + Enforce OSHA and shop-specific safety policies; train on PPE usage and safe work practices.

    + Integrate hazard recognition, ergonomics, and proper handling of compressed gases and consumables into training.

    + Support incident prevention by coaching safe behaviors, reporting hazards, and reinforcing lockout/tagout where applicable.

    + Teach blueprint reading, welding symbols, WPS adherence, joint prep, and fit-up.

    + Ensure welds meet project specifications, code requirements, and shop tolerances.

    + Instruct on inspection methods and corrective actions.

    + Train on machine calibration, maintenance basics, and consumable selection.

    + Assist with troubleshooting common welding issues and standardize best practices.

    + Coordinate with maintenance to ensure equipment readiness for training.

    + Maintain training records, certifications, attendance, and skill matrices.

    + Provide performance reports and recommendations for advancement or additional training.

    + Keep current on welding technology, codes, and industry standards; incorporate updates into curricula.

    + Mentor experienced welders toward advanced certifications.

    + Partner with production leads to align training with throughput, quality, and rework reduction goals.

    Essential Skills

    + Deep knowledge of various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-Cored, etc.), metallurgy, and safety standards.

    + Ability to troubleshoot welding issues and explain methods for specific applications.

    + Expertise in OSHA regulations, PPE requirements, and safe handling of equipment.

    + Ability to instill a safety-first mindset in trainees and enforce proper procedures consistently.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in a community or technical college welding program preferred.

    + Minimum of 5 years of welding experience in a metal fabrication environment desired.

    + Working knowledge of AWS standards and practices.

    + Accurate blueprint reading experience.

    + Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    + Strong coaching, motivation, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    + Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the internet.

    + Experience with NAVSEA welding specifications including Techpubs 248 and 278 is desired.

    + Experience in writing and qualifying weld procedure specifications (WPS, PQR, QTR) is desired.

    + Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, internet, and email.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $92000.00 - $103000.00/yr.
