    Principal Integrity Engineer (DIMP) – Natural Gas Distribution Utility

     

    Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring a highly motivated, self-driven, and experienced engineer to provide technical expertise, leadership, and guidance to maintain the integrity and safety of Utilities’ natural gas distribution system.

    As the Principal Integrity Engineer, you will join and help manage a talented team of engineers responsible for providing operational support, engineering, and planning services for Colorado Springs Utilities' natural gas distribution infrastructure. Utilities’ distribution system is comprised of more than 5,000 miles of gas mains and services and serves over 200,000 customers. The work that you do will directly impact the current and future safety and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure.

     

    This position will be the Principal Engineer for the Gas Operations Engineering Group, Integrity team. This individual will be the lead engineer for the Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP) and will work with other related program engineers, including Corrosion, Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP), and Leaks. You will be the senior integrity engineer and point of contact for integrity questions from Gas Operations, Gas Construction, Field Engineering, Regulatory & Compliance, Field Operations, GIS, and other gas Engineering groups. You will work closely with multiple groups to drive and prioritize main and service renewals to improve the safety, compliance, and integrity of the Colorado Springs Utilities natural gas distribution system.

    Key Areas of Focus:

    Your responsibilities will include:

    + Managing the overall DIMP, with support from a Project Manager and a Gas Portfolio Scheduler.

    + Filling the role of Principal Engineer on a team consisting of a Corrosion Engineer, Leak Engineer, and MAOP Engineers. Guiding the team for integrity initiatives, including but not limited to: data research/cleanup projects, material sampling/testing, field data collection training/documentation, implementing advanced leak detection technologies, and MAOP reconfirmation efforts.

    + Revising, updating, and acquiring leadership approvals for the DIMP written Plan publications.

    + Running quarterly meetings with DIMP Subject Matter Experts, crafting and distributing DIMP Communication Publications, and quarterly reporting.

    + Leading DIMP Audits with Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CO PUC) and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) as required.

    + Maintaining and modifying DIMP Power BI dashboards for tracking program metrics and KPI’s.

    + Lead engineer for revising and running DNV Synergi Pipeline risk models. Maintaining all risk model procedures, resulting data, and baselines.

    + Future year project planning based on risk model results and additional company drivers, such as coordination withthe City of Colorado Springs Paving initiatives. Project scoping includes estimates for duration, material quantities (installation and retirement), and project cost estimates based on contractor bid unit pricing.

    + Attending and contributing to gas industry committees on the topics of Integrity Management and DIMP (American Gas Association, American Public Gas Association, etc.). Staying current with industry events and trends through National Transportation Safety Board accident reports and PHMSA advisory bulletins.

    + Contributing to new and existing Operations & Maintenance Manual and other standard operating processes & procedures

    + Ensuring compliance with Title 49 CFR Part 192 and other relevant standards

    Who You Are:

    A self-reliant engineer who enjoys problem-solving, improving processes, and working with a variety of stakeholders from management to field personnel. In addition to the technical aspects of this job, you excel at taking initiative and driving projects forward, communicating and sharing information effectively and appropriately, and documenting procedures & work processes. You also possess sound critical thinking and decision-making ability, and strong interpersonal skills that will allow you to establish effective relationships with internal and external customers.

    Skills:

    + Working knowledge of CFR Title 49, Part 192

    + ESRI GIS: Arc Map, Arc Pro, Field Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS Online

    + Microsoft Power BI, standard Microsoft Office Suite Applications

    + Presentation Skills to a wide audience (executives to field personnel)

    + Coordinating with multiple internal entities to execute DIMP priorities

    Required Qualifications:

    + 4 Year Engineering Degree from ABET accredited program

    + 4+ years of natural gas experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + You should have around 7+ years of engineering experience with 5+ years of experience in the gas utility industry or natural gas operations

    + Registered Professional Engineer

    + AAMP Corrosion Certifications

    Extensive knowledge of industry best practices in:

    + Distribution Integrity Management and Cathodic Protection

    + Strong understanding of multiple codes, including, but not limited to, PHMSA Part 192, ANSI, API, ASTM, NFPA, and IFGC

    + Gas pipeline material specifications, MAOP, and TVC principles

    + Leak investigation, classification, and gas mitigation

    + Gas pipeline construction practices and process

    + Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a small amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
