    Description

    We are seeking a Controller for a well-established nonprofit apprenticeship training organization with corporate-level complexity while maintaining their mission-driven focus in the construction industry with focus on workforce development and skilled trades education. Operating multiple campuses across the Midwest, they've experienced significant expansion while staying true to their core mission. This is an organization where employees build long careers where the average tenure is 10+ years, with many reaching 20+ years. This newly created Controller position offers strategic financial leadership during a period of organizational growth. You'll report directly to the executive team and oversee all accounting operations for a multi-location operation with approximately 160 employees.     Key Responsibilities

    + Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger

    + Prepare quarterly financial reports with clear breakdowns for presentation to the board of trustees

    + Manage multi-state payroll tax compliance through ADP Workforce Now

    + Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, US Department of Labor requirements, and federal grant regulations

    + Coordinate annual audits and 990 tax filings

    + Supervise and mentor accounting team

    + Lead migration from QuickBooks Online to Sage Intacct ERP system

    + Track and manage restricted/unrestricted funds, grants, and program budgets

    + Establish clear, efficient, and consistent processes across the accounting team

    + Assist with budgeting, cash flow management, and financial planning

    Requirements

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field

    + 5+ years progressive accounting experience with strong GAAP fundamentals

    + 3-5+ years supervisory experience with proven people leadership skills

    + Experience with multi-state payroll tax compliance and ADP Workforce Now

    + Proficiency in QuickBooks Online; ERP experience required

    + Experience preparing and reviewing 990 tax forms

    + Strong technical skills combined with collaborative, teaching-oriented leadership style

    + Excellent organizational and communication skills

    + High integrity, patience to train others, and ability to work well in a team environment

    + Budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling

    + Advanced Excel and reporting skills

    Preferred Skills:

    + Construction and/or union experience

    + Non Profit experience

    + Grant management and reporting experience

    + Sage Intacct or ERP
