    Job Summary

    The Radiological Protection & Chemistry team at Millstone Power Station plays an essential role in the safe operation of the site by protecting people and their environment from potential hazards. Leading the team to achieve the highest levels operational performance is the **Manager – Radiological Protection & Chemistry** (“Manager”).

    As the department senior leader, the Manager will be responsible for a wide variety of department activities to include:

    + Senior-level supervision of overall Radiological Protection programs, Radiation Protection & Chemistry controls, and radioactive waste management;

    + Planning and direction of the team’s deliverables and priorities;

    + Ensuring that individual team members are properly trained and fully qualified to execute their assignment;

    + Ensuring the department is properly manned and equipped to execute assigned work;

    + Evaluating the effectiveness of radiological protection and chemistry program elements, identifying weaknesses and taking necessary actions to improve performance;

    + Analyzing trends in radiological/chemical work performance to identity adverse trends and then developing necessary action plans to improve performance;

    + Developing and implementing policy changes as appropriate;

    + Monitoring the effectiveness of chemistry controls used to protect vital equipment;

    + Managing radioactive waste processing and disposal programs to minimize station effluent releases and land burial quantities;

    + Identifying and reviewing causes, concerns, and corrective actions for radiological and chemical incidents to ensure appropriate actions are taken to prevent recurrence

    + Developing and managing department budgets and operational goals.

     

    Further, the Manager role may be selected to act as the site Radiation Protection Manager (RPM) as described in the Nuclear Facility Quality Assurance Program Description (DOM-QA-1) section 1.2.

     

    In all aspects of their role, the Manager is expected to establish and grow effective partnerships with all other departments at Millstone Power Station. They will also be expected to identify strategic risks that can result from changes in the regulatory environment. They must maintain a laser focus on executing essential daily action items while nurturing a sustainable team culture dedicated to constant improvement.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

    To be qualified for the **Manager-Radiological Protection & Chemistry** , one must meet the following required knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences:

    + 8+ years of relevant experience related to radiological protection and/or chemistry

    + 3+ years of nuclear power plant experience

    + 1+ years of supervisor or management experience

    + Completion of DOM-QA-1, "Nuclear Facility Quality Assurance Program Description", section 2.5 and Appendix C.

    + Demonstrated proficiency in leading and directing the implementation of the Radiation Protection program

    + Strong communications with other managers as well as direct reports.

    + Proven ability to provide clear direction and expectations

    + Demonstrated presentation skills to large groups of employees

    + Strong interpersonal skills to work with multiple groups; ability to motivate and lead an organization with limited direction.

    + Proven ability to foster teamwork at the manager and worker level by communicating needs and expected outcomes

    + Ability to realign resources to meet the most critical needs tied to improve overall performance.

    + Demonstrated capability to follow up on performance shortfalls and get organization to respond. –

    + Broad knowledge of programs and functions across nuclear power stations

    + Perform general supervisory administrative duties including, but not limited to, budget control, employee performance reviews, coaching, and correcting.

    Preferred Candidates will also possess:

    + National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) or Certified Health Physicist (CHP) preferred

    + Holds or has held a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license

    Education Requirements

    Required Degree: (equivalency not acceptable)

    Bachelor

    **Preferred Disciplines:** Engineering, Radiation Science, Science

     

    Other related physical science degree may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.

     

    Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

     

    Preferred: National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) or Certified Health Physicist (CHP).

     

    ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.3.3, NRC Regulatory Guide 1.8, Revision 4, Staff Regulatory Guidance 1.3

     

    Education requirements: Baccalaureate in related physical science or engineering and specific formal training in radiation protection.

     

    Minimum experience for the position: Related experience which shall include 5 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience to include 3 yrs; Supervisory or management experience to include 1 yr.

    Special requirements:

    1) During the years of nuclear power plant experience, the individual shall have participated in supervisory or management activities at a nuclear power plant during the following periods:

    a) 1 month of routine refueling outage,

     

    b) 2 months of operation above 20% power;

     

    2) The 3 years of nuclear power plant experience should at least be at a level requiring policy, planning and decision making related to the programmatic aspects of the radiation protection program as a whole;

     

    3) The individual filling the radiation protection manager responsibilities for the station shall have 3 years of experience in two or more functional areas of radiological protection, which includes as low as reasonably achievable, bioassay/whole body, decontamination, dosimetry, radiochemistry, radiological environmental monitoring program/radiological effluent technical specification, Radiation Protection Instrumentation, Radiation Protection operations, or radioactive waste.

    A qualified supervisor or manager is assigned to fulfill the radiological protection manager position described in Section 2.5 of this QAPD.

     

    REFER to ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.1, for guidance on alternatives to degree requirements, experience substitution for education, and alternatives to experience (not allowed for Special requirements)

     

    Note: Dominion Energy minimum requirements may exceed any ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.
