Job Responsibilities/Duties
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste.

This position entails development of innovative and creative engineering solutions to address elementary to highly complex technical problems. The Engineer will be responsible for providing technical guidance and engineering services for technology development activities that can advance the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment mission. They will perform a variety of engineering duties including, but not limited to, concept development, design reviews, calculations, specification development, testing, and field and vendor / laboratory facility walkdowns. A key responsibility will be planning, overseeing, and monitoring the execution of technology development activities. The Engineer may support the activities of National Laboratories, industry vendors, and / or academia.
* Assume technical responsibility for one or more technology development programs / program elements
* Coordinate with National Laboratories, industry vendors, academia, and tank farm field organizations on technical work to be performed associated with technology development program(s)
* Facilitate comment disposition on test plans, technical reports, designs, and other documents and resolve differences or conflicts prior to transmitting the documents to subcontracted engineering firms, national laboratories, and the customer.
* Prepare cost and schedule estimates on proposed tasks in assigned area, ensuring schedules are task-based, resource-loaded, and the status is correctly provided in support of the tasks
* Apply innovative technical knowledge toward the reduction of the cost and improvement of engineering solutions where possible and incorporate new ideas resulting from interactions with tank farm field organizations or technology users.
* Demonstrate problem solving skills in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives when defining solutions to technical challenges
* Provide technical support to fabrication, construction, turnover, and startup activities of technology solutions that are transitioned to field deployment/end users
* Support preparation of technical manuals, reports, and operating procedures
* Prepare statements of work, or contribute technical requirements for statements of work
* Review and evaluate subcontractor proposal(s), and sign the procurement technical evaluation form as evaluator
* Participate in work planning sessions associated with the technology programs assigned
* Prepare, deliver, and submit technical presentations for technical review meetings; communicate updates to other engineering personnel, management, and field organizations
* Demonstrate creative ability in solving technical problems for collaboration with other Engineers in preparation and presentation of technical papers, articles, talks or patent disclosures
* Conduct site / vendor visits and investigate technology maturation challenges, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations
Required Qualifications
Grade 16:
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and
Two (2) years of related experience
Grade 17:
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and
Five (5) years of related experience
Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.
Grade 18:
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and
Seven (7) years of related experience
Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.
Desired Qualifications
Previous experience working with National Laboratories and/or Technology Development vendors
Experience in applied research, prototype fabrication and testing
Compensation & Benefits
In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
Hiring Range Minimum: $88,200
Hiring Range Maximum: $134,588
