**Location:** Baystate Medical Center
**Schedule:** Full-Time, Day Shift – 40 hours/week (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Rotating weekends and holidays required.

Summary
Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Operating Room Assistant/Orderly performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities within the established policies and procedures of Perioperative and Heart & Vascular Services. This role requires collaboration with all members of the healthcare team, including technicians, nurses, physicians, surgeons, and other suite or hospital staff.
The Assistant supports safe, efficient surgical care by assisting with room turnover, equipment inspection and cleaning, supply stocking, patient transport and positioning, and picking up blood products from Transfusion Medicine Services as directed by the RN or coordinator. This description covers the essential functions of the position; the incumbent may also perform similar tasks or other duties as assigned. Management reserves the right to modify or add responsibilities at any time.
Key Responsibilities
Expedites room turnover and setup to maintain throughput in conjunction with the surgical team.
Maintains a safe, aseptic environment and ensures all equipment and rooms are prepared for procedures. Reports unsafe or faulty equipment to the Charge Nurse/Suite Coordinator and follows appropriate protocols.
Performs daily equipment inspection and cleaning in assigned areas, adhering to Body Substance Precautions and using appropriate personal protective equipment. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Participates in staff development and completes all mandatory annual in-service updates. Demonstrates initiative in learning new procedures.
Maintains established supply PAR levels and communicates supply needs to the team; independently checks and restocks blanket warmers throughout the day.
Provides patient care within defined limits, supplies necessary equipment to suite rooms, and assists suite nurses as needed.
Answers phones and assists the RN with patient transports to PACU or other nursing units.
Assists with patient positioning in the operating room as needed.
Supports Heart & Vascular Technicians with pre-operative patient preparation, including clipping and prepping.

+ 3–6 months in a hospital or clinical setting
Skills and Competencies
+ Ability to follow detailed instructions, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively with team members
+ Successful completion of orientation program
+ Strong attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, mechanical aptitude, and intact or corrected vision and hearing
+ Ability to work independently and maintain composure in stressful surgical environments
