    SHERIFF’S OFFICE OF WORCESTER COUNTY POSITION DESCRIPTION[1] _ _ POSITION: Principal General ClerkII BARGAINING UNIT: NEPBA 515 JOB GRADE 17 _ _ *I. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* To provide complex clerical and administrative support in assisting a department head or supervisor to discharge the duties of the office. Responsible for a variety of projects and activities requiring comprehensive knowledge of department's operations and familiarity with relevant laws, and the procedures, rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Office; all other related work as required. *II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:**(2) * • Assists department head with special projects and numerous administrative tasks; prepares and types a variety of reports, forms, records, memorandum, correspondence and other materials as required; performs data and word processing where appropriate. • May be directed to work on special assignments or projects such as: monitoring inmate telephone system, administering citizen-initiated petitions and maintaining the sex offender registry with respect to incarcerated inmates. (Department tasks for special assignments are listed separately). • Operates computer, calculator, typewriter, telephone, and other standard office equipment. • Makes frequent contact with local, county, state and federal officials and agencies, Sheriff’s Office and other Jail and House of Correction employees, social workers and the general public, requiring patience, tact and discretion; may have regular contact with inmates. • Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates. • Has access to department oriented confidential information ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [1]This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change. Education and Experience:* High school graduation including or supplemented by courses in typing and secretarial sciences, associates degree desirable; five (5) years of experience in general clerical and secretarial work, with government experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. *B. Special Requirements:* Ability to become certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Willingness to complete special certification programs related to specific work functions, as required, such as in-service suicide prevention program. Willingness to work in a correctional facility. *C. Knowledge, Ability and Skill:* /Knowledge./ Thorough knowledge of office practices, procedures, machines and word processing. Familiarity with correctional facility operations. Thorough knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws as they pertain to departmental functions and operations. Extensive knowledge of departmental operations, procedures and policies. /Ability./ Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to deal tactfully and appropriately with the general public, inmates, and correctional facility departments and to assist others in an effective manner. Ability to independently make decisions and solve problems. Ability to operate a computer. /Skill/. Skill in typing and familiarity with computer assisted techniques and applications. *D. Physical Qualifications*: Minimal physical effort demanded when performing functions. Ability to operate a keyboard and calculator at efficient speed, and to sit at a computer for long periods. May be required to stand for long periods of time. Specific vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift, move, and/or push furniture and equipment which may weigh 30 pounds or more. *IV. JOB ENVIRONMENT:* Work is performed under typical office and correctional facility conditions; work environment is moderately quiet. *V. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:* Works under the general direction of the department head or other supervisory personnel; following department rules, regulations and policies. *VI.
