About the Position
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) Maintenance Mechanic role supports the Environmental Systems Division (ESD) by maintaining, repairing, and inspecting important safety equipment such as confined space gear, shoring, and air-monitoring tools. You may also help oversee equipment areas at Albina Yard and the Materials Distribution Center and assist with updating standard operating procedures.
You will fix and maintain tools and equipment following safety rules and manufacturer instructions. This job requires flexibility, problem-solving, and the ability to respond to changing needs. This is an essential position, meaning you may be required to report during emergencies such as severe weather, flooding, earthquakes or other emergency response scenarios.
About the Division
The Environmental Systems Division (ESD) is part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation. ESD supports the City’s wastewater and stormwater collection system by providing stormwater, sewer cleaning, and sewer repair services. This work is via a ‘Cooperative Work Agreement’ to the Bureau of Environmental Services, in support of the City of Portland’s federal and state permits protecting public health, safety and the environment, known as the ‘National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)’ permit. To do this work safely, ESD relies on specialized equipment that must be kept in good working condition. This position will support the safety inspection, maintenance, repair, and documentation of this equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and processes.
What You’ll Do
You will help keep safety equipment and tools in good working order. Examples of your work include:
+ Inspect and track safety equipment such as shoring, confined space gear, and air monitors
+ Check shields and shoring for damage or missing parts
+ Order parts and maintain inventory records in Maximo
+ Remove equipment from service and update records when repairs are needed
+ Perform basic tool and equipment maintenance
+ Keep work areas clean and safe at Albina Yard
+ Deliver supplies to job sites
+ Support safety training related to ESD equipment
+ Fabricate simple tools or fixtures when needed
+ Communicate with vendors about equipment and safety requirements
+ Assist with quality control for sewer repair equipment
+ Provide information for reports and performance measures

To Qualify
Applicants must meet each of the following minimum qualifications that are required for this position:
+ Experience applying the requirements associated with maintaining equipment per manufacturers specifications, including how to ensure warranty and specification maintained.
+ Experience maintaining repair and maintenance records for safety equipment such as shoring, confined space and air monitors.
+ Experience recognizing and safely making required repairs to broken, unsafe, or nonfunctional equipment.
+ Experience with use, maintenance and repair of confined space entry equipment, excavation shoring equipment, air monitor equipment, and other safety equipment.
+ Experience working safely and following hazards and safety practices, and OSHA standards,
+ Ability to work as a team player with co-workers in a diverse workforce and respond appropriately to questions or concerns from other employees and the public.

+ Ability to perform work in a variety of conditions, both indoors and outdoors, and in various weather conditions.
Although Not Required, you may:

Working Conditions
Work in this class is typically performed indoors or outdoors in various weather conditions. Incumbents are typically required to safely lift up to 100 pounds with or without assistance and to wear protective gear.

The Prehire Evaluation may consist of a medical exam, screenings, and a physical capacit ies test (PCT) required for work clearance and safety compliance. The PCT measures physical ability through job-related tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing, shoveling, and repetitive movements. Unless already employed in a City position requiring a similar or more demanding PCT, candidates must pass all required tasks to proceed with employment.
