The Business Innovation & Technology (BIT) Process Team supports UW Facilities by delivering data-driven insights that improve operational efficiency, inform decision-making, and enhance cross-unit collaboration. The team maintains a growing portfolio of analytical tools, reporting assets, and data models that enable Facilities departments to manage work, plan resources, and measure performance.
Facilities has an outstanding opportunity open for a** **_Temporary_** **Business Intelligence Developer.
The Business Intelligence Developer plays a key role in transforming operational data into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders across UW Facilities. Reporting to the Manager of Business Intelligence, this position develops and maintains a wide range of reports, dashboards, and their supporting data models across both Tableau and Power BI. A successful BI Developer operates as an internal technical consultant, working directly with business partners to understand reporting needs, translate requirements into technical solutions, and deliver high-quality reporting products.
The ideal candidate combines strong SQL skills, experience with modern reporting tools, and the ability to design flexible, multifunctional data models. This role also contributes to the team's evolving data architecture and participates in shaping reporting standards, documentation practices, and automation opportunities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
This role has a direct impact on UW Facilities’ ability to communicate operational performance, support strategic planning, and identify process improvements. Responsibilities include report development and analytics (approx. 50%), data modeling (approx. 30%), and ETL/pipeline work (approx. 20%). Duties include:
Standardized Reporting and Analytics (50%)
• Develop and maintain complex SQL queries, including CTE-heavy logic and subqueries, for reporting and analysis.
• Analyze operational and business data to identify trends, performance issues, and opportunities for improvement.
• Build reports and dashboards using Tableau, Power BI, SSRS, and Excel, selecting the appropriate tool based on business needs.
• Maintain and organize a reporting catalog, including documentation of report logic, SOPs, and data dependencies.
• Troubleshoot and enhance existing reports, including query tuning, logic adjustments, and performance optimization.
• Work independently to evaluate data quality, validate results, and ensure the accuracy and clarity of analytical outputs.
Data Maintenance and Modeling (30%)
• Develop a deep understanding of existing data structures, governance policies, and architectural standards.
• Design and refine data models to support new reporting needs, combining existing enterprise models with purpose-built solutions.
• Assist in building ETL processes using SQL or Python, contributing to developing more automated and scalable pipelines.
• Participate in maintaining data quality, monitoring data completeness, and performing regular audits.
• Produce clear documentation for ETL processes, data models, and BI databases.
Analytics and Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
• Manage ongoing KPI reporting and dashboard development for operational and business metrics.
• Interpret analytical findings and make recommendations to stakeholders based on independent judgment.
• Fulfill ad-hoc reporting and analytical requests with quick turnaround while maintaining accuracy and clarity.
• Work closely with business stakeholders to define metrics, interpret data, evaluate findings, and provide recommendations that support decision-making.
• Translate business requirements into clear technical specifications, analytical frameworks, and reporting solutions.
• Use contemporary visualization and analysis methods, including dashboards, charts, and infographics.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Statistics, or related field.
• Three or more years of experience developing and implementing reporting solutions.
• Strong proficiency in SQL (T-SQL preferred).
• Experience working with SQL Server and related tools, including SSRS.
• Hands-on experience with data visualization tools like Tableau and Power BI.
• Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, complex formulas, macros).
• Understanding of ETL concepts and data modeling principles.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience working with stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver technical solutions.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Commitment to supporting diverse perspectives and working in an inclusive environment.
_Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration._
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience using Python for automation or ETL processes.
• Familiarity with JSON, APIs, and integrating external data sources.
• Experience working with virtualized or cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, or similar).
• Experience working in higher education or large, complex organizations.
• Familiarity with IT frameworks such as SDLC, ITSM, or ITIL.
• Experience using Git or GitHub for version control.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$72,000.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$96,000.00 annual
