    Overview

     

    The Control Desk Specialist is responsible for assisting the healthcare team with clerical duties and facilitates communication and contributes to patient care.

    Responsibilities

    Clerical Support

     

    + Greets all customers, patients, family members, physicians and healthcare team members, ascertains their needs and provides assistance or direction accordingly.

    + Responds to the phone and call system promptly and courteously.

    + Accurately uses the copy/fax machine and/or tube station.

    + Assures medical record order is concurrently maintained per hospital policy and/or department routine.

    + Assures a new medical record is accessible for patient admission.

    + Assists in accurately ordering and scheduling patient procedures, follow-up healthcare team appointments.

    + Assists department leadership team other clerical functions as directed.

    + Maintains a neat and orderly nurses’ station.

    + Assists in maintenance of department nourishment and supply inventories.

    + Maintains a system for control and follow-up on department items/equipment sent for repair.

    + Supports the St. Luke’s Hospital’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model in their daily work practices.

     

    Effective Communication

     

    + Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information and/or patient care data to the healthcare team, patients and/or family members in a professional manner.

    + Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers.

    + Real-time EMR documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.

    + Hand-offs are done with attention to detail and with safety as a priority.

    + Consults with healthcare team members, as appropriate.

    + Complies with established department routines, policies and procedures.

    Qualifications

    + High school diploma or GED

    + Ability to successfully complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training

    + Ability to effectively use information systems and Microsoft Office systems

    + Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
